West Chelsea Loft

by Amy Lau Design in New York, NY

For an intellectual client with a minimalist sensibility, we crafted a modernist interior inspired by their interests in Eastern ideologies, aesthetics and design. Located in the heart of the Chelsea gallery district, ALD created a balance of old and new, juxtaposing historical pieces like a 6th century pre-columbian textile from Peru, with modernist elements like the sensuous live edge mantle on the Nakashima-inspired fireplace. The client’s home provides areas for both private contemplation and social interaction, while emanating a serene modernist aesthetic.

In this space, ALD had the privilege of working with a client who has a longing for traditional craftsmanship and artistry. To achieve this, Lau sought out a myriad of master artisans and accomplished artists to create a synthesis of modern American design with a sensibility toward materials more commonly associated with an Asian tradition of craft. Working with such master craftsmen as Tyler Hayes of BDDW, Miya Shogi and light artist John Wigmore, the client was explicit in his request for handmade quality and uniqueness in every aspect.
