West Village Townhouse

Family Home by Shawn Henderson Interior Design in New York, NY

Architectural Digest called this 6,000-sf West Village project “a supremely chic contemporary take on a 19th-century townhouse.” The 1857 building had been subdivided into multiple apartments. Architect Peter Pennoyer couldn’t salvage much (two fireplaces now in the living room and master bedroom). But the owners wanted the residence to look like it had always been there, so Peter wielded his typical period panache: a graceful spiral staircase, recessed paneling, classical moldings. Channeling my clients’ more contemporary tastes, I ushered the house into the now by mixing bespoke and vintage furnishings along with custom, hand-painted wall finishes and an interesting assortment of vintage light fixtures throughout.
