Gold: The Impossible Collection 'Special Edition'
By Assouline Publishing
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Gold—pure, indestructible, dazzling: Since the dawn of time, this precious metal has generated countless fantasies and beliefs. Whether it leads powerful rulers to the afterlife, casts a delicate glow on the Buddhist pagodas of Southeast Asia, illuminates the halos of saints, adds brilliance to the crowns of kings and popes, gleams on haute couture runways or glitters on a rapper’s grill, gold is an eternal symbol of wealth and glory, the prized element’s highly malleable nature lending itself to infinite metamorphoses.
What accounts for such a lasting and universal fascination? Thanks to its irresistible luminosity and remarkable resilience, gold is the ideal medium to symbolize both visible and invisible forces. Artists from Gustav Klimt to Andy Warhol and Yves Klein have exalted its metaphysical and fantastic nature. Ancient Egyptians regarded gold...

Art Nouveau Bronze Sculpture “Cendrillon” or Cinderella by Emmanuel Villanis
By Emmanuel Villanis
Located in Shippensburg, PA
EMMANUEL VILLANIS [after]
French, fl. 1880-1920
"Cendrillon" (Cinderella)
Lost-wax patinated bronze signed in cast on left of socle "E. Villanis", titled to integral socle in raised relief "Cendrillon" cast circa 1930-50
Item # 212PVG15A
A charming bust of a young maiden entitled Cendrillon (Cinderella), it is executed in the lost-wax method in a single piece with an integral socle that is titled in raised relief. The young woman is serious in her composure with a quiet strength, her eyes slightly downcast in the clothing of a common girl, her diaphonous garment sliding off one shoulder while the overall sculpture remains chaste and elusive. The surface is finished in a two-toned patina, the reddish-oxide surface being utilized for the flesh tones and a darker brown for the base and garments. Casting from the second quarter of the 20th century.
ARTIST
Born in Lille, France, little is known about the life of Emmanuel Villanis, despite the fact that he has a simply incredible level of output during the years of 1880-1920. First exhibiting at Salon in 1886, he went on to exhibit nearly five-hundred models, almost exclusively featuring the female form with strong influence of the Art Nouveau movement evident in every aspect of his work. He received honorable mention at the 1889 Exposition Universelle, Paris.

Pair of Bronze Models of a Standing Bull and a Running Cow, circa 1890
By Francois Auguste Hippolyte Peyrol 1, Isidore Jules Bonheur
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A pair of large and finely patinated bronze models of a standing bull and a running cow after models by Isidor-Jules Bonheur, Cast on a Naturalistic Base.
French, circa 1890.
Signed 'I BONHEUR' and stamped 'PEYROL EDITEUR'.
Bonheur was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon and his naturalistic depiction of farm animals, including cattle, was one of his most popular subjects. The bronze was cast by his brother-in-law, Hippolyte Peyrol, who ran one of the most successful art foundries in Paris at this time.
Isidore-Jules Bonheur (1827-1901) was the son of the painter Raymond Bonheur and younger brother of Rosa Bonheur, the famous sculptor. He was born in Bordeaux and studied painting, at first with his father and then with the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, moving on to sculpture in 1848.
He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1848 with a painting and plaster study of the same subject ‘African horseman attacked by a lioness’. From then onwards, Bonheur exhibited regularly at the Salon as well as other exhibitions, winning medals in 1865 and 1869 together with the prized Gold Medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889.
He was awarded the Legion d’Honneur in 1895.
Most of Bonheur’s casts were by his uncle by marriage, Hippolyte Peyrol, whose tiny foundry mark is often very difficult to find.
Bonheur’s studies range from farm animals, bears and tigers in a very naturalistic vein to equestrian groups. Although noted primarily for his small groups he did complete two large scale commissions, one to his sister Rosa, at Fontainbleau and the other, two stone lions at the steps of the Royal...

Rare Art Deco Bronze Sculpture “Mischievous” by Paul Philippe
Located in Shippensburg, PA
PAUL PHILIPPE
Polish/French, 1870-1930
"Mischievous"
Polychromed gilt bronze over original marble base signed in cast "P. PHILIPPE" signed in cast "i9.R / France" with foundry seal of A.G. Paris
Item # 212MPH15S
An exquisite and rare example of Paul Philippe's Mischievous finished in a brilliant polychromed gilt, the young woman grabs her reddish-brown hair in hand while looking off into the corner with a sly look in her eyes that suggests she holds a secret that we will never know. The base signature is captured directly from the mold. Situated over its original faceted base. A very fine work.
ARTIST
Born in Thorn in Poland in 1870, Paul Philippe studied under Antonin Larroux at the École des Beaux-Arts after moving to Paris, France around 1900. He exhibited extensively at all of the major French salons and developed his own voice in sculpture by focusing his ouevre around the movement of the female body, often depicting exotic models in highly theatrical poses with a loose adherence to realism in his idealized visions. He walked a fine line between Art Nouveau and Art Deco while his figures do tend towards the latter. He executed figures in bronze and chryselephantine and worked with some of the best foundries in France and Germany. Many examples of his work are held in the Art Deco Museum in Moscow, Russia.

“Putto on Doe” Art Nouveau Bronze Sculpture by Charles Korschann
By Charles Korschann
Located in Shippensburg, PA
CHARLES KORSCHANN
Czech, 1872-1943
Putto Riding a Doe
Medium-brown patinated bronze over an original marble base Signed "CH. KORRSCHANN." and sealed with foundry cachet for Louchet
Item # 301LCJ14L
A very fine lifetime casting of Charles Korschann's Putto Riding a Doe, the model is steeped in the elements of the Art Nouveau with a distinct celebration of the naturalistic. The putto grasps a simple harp in his hand while a loose garment bound in a belt encircling his waist billows in the unseen wind. The doe looks on with disinterest, unconcerned about its surroundings and almost at one with its rider. It is a carefully composed idealization of the natural world and the potential for harmony between man and beast. The casting is exquisite, typical of work from Louchet, and is finished in a medium-brown translucent patina.
Charles Korschann
Born in Brno, Monrovia in 1872 as Charles Korschmann, later dropping the "m" to appear less Germanic, he studied at the fine arts academies of Vienna, Berlin and Paris before finally establishing himself in Paris in 1894. He spent his entire career working in Paris, exhibiting at the 1900 Exposition Universelle where he was awarded a Bronze Medal and from 1894 through 1905 at the Société des Artistes Français.
His work is very distinctive and immediately recognizable, a most important trait as an artist and a particular accomplishment in light of the output of his contemporaries. He was to sculpture what Alphonse Mucha was to graphics, both men originating from the same province in Czechoslovakia and having similar influences in Paris. It is rather fitting that he would execute a bust of Alphonse Mucha for the Museum of Brno in honor of his accomplishments.
