Poul Cadovius (1911-2011) was a Danish designer and manufacturer. Trained as a saddler and upholster, Cadovius became interested in industrial design and established his own furniture manufacturing company under the name of Royal Systems in 1945.
Between 1964-1967, Cadovius purchased the well-established furniture manufacturer France & Søn and renamed the company Cado. Cadovius collaborated with the impressive roster of iconic Danish designers through France & Søn and Cado, including Sigvar Bernadotte, Grete Jalk, Arne Vodder, Edvard Kindt-Larsen, and Finn Juhl.

An intriguing set of restored armchairs, which are confirmed to be from the 1940s and earlier. The question is - how much earlier? Crafted in the Regency style, this set of Ebonized and Gilt frames chairs feature gold colored leather seats and a charismatic silhouette with a lot of interesting artistic details.
*NOTE* We have eight available, they are priced as pairs.
The chairs are signed with Mid-Century era upholstery tags and a business card for an antiques restorer. The business card is of a 1940s style and the address used is the style of address used between 1943 and 1963 which is before ZIP codes were used but after the implementation of the 2 digit Postal Code system.
What is currently unknown is whether Fred H. Mehrhoff reproduced these chairs in that time or if he had restored them. Generally speaking, antique restorers did much more restoring than they did reproducing. Reproductions were mostly private commissions from local clientele.
We found a 1935 newspaper directory with Fred H. Mehrhoff listed as a cabinetmaker in Ohio, which further supports his career as an antiques restoration specialist. Again, the question is whether he crafted these chairs in the 1940s or possibly 1950s, or if he restored them and they are much older - perhaps of the Regency period (early 1800s).
If he restored these in the 1940s, which we are inclined to believe, they are likely an important set and from an important maker or design house, such as Maison Jansen. These have the aesthetic style and taste of Maison Jansen, and we definitely would not be surprised to learn these were used in a Jansen interior project at some point in the late 1800s to early 1900s.
These Maison Jansen attributed armchairs would work great in a French Neoclassical, Classical, Art Deco, or Hollywood Regency home. Also consider mixing it up in a Post-Modern, Mid-Century Modern, Contemporary, Space Age Mod, Scandanavian Modern, Danish Modern or Zen / Minimalist room as a splash of juxtaposition. This fantastic Dutch Old Master marine oil painting is by noted Dutch marine artist Abraham Storck. Painted circa 1670 the composition is a number of ships heading out to sea, their sails billowing and banners and flags blowing in the wind. The sea is also choppy and clouds race over head. It is an ambitious, busy nautical scene and Storck has perfectly captured the energy and movement of the ships and smaller vessels. This is an excellent example of a 17th century Dutch Old Master oil painting.

Abraham Storck (1644-1708) was a Dutch painter, who enjoyed a reputation for his marine paintings, topographical views and Italianate harbour scenes. Storck was also an outstanding draughtsman. Storck was baptized in the Noorderkerk, a Protestant church in the Jordaan. His father was the painter Jan Jansz Sturck (or Johannes Storck) (1603-1673), from Wesel; his mother was Teuntje (Apolonia) Jacobs. The couple married in 1628. Storck had two brothers, who were also painters using the name Sturckenburch until c. 1688 after which they started calling themselves Storck or Sturck. It is likely they were all trained with their father in the family workshop and joined the local Guild of Saint Luke, otherwise it was impossible to sell any painting. Circa 1666 Storck established his workshop producing naval, harbor scenes as well as landscape paintings and city scapes. In 1670 he traveled with his brother Jacob and worked in Germany. In 1694, at age 49, he married the widow Neeltje Pieters van Meyservelt. At the end of his life he lived on Kattenburg near the harbour. This Pleyel concert grand piano crafted in Paris in 1870 is a timeless masterpiece that embodies the elegance and craftsmanship of 19th-century French piano manufacturing. Pleyel instruments are renowned for their exceptional quality and rich musicality, representing the pinnacle of piano design in the Romantic era, and this piano – an early example of the technological innovation of cross-stringing that was burgeoning during the period – is one in a series of only six ever produced.
This piano is in extraordinarily immaculate condition with nearly every original part, including the soundboard, pristine ivory keys, and the brass inlay in its beautifully figured walnut cabinet. Candle stands slide forward on either side of the collapsable music desk.
This piano was first purchased by the French Count Charles Étienne Gustave Le Clerc, count of Juigné (1825-1900), one of the wealthiest landowners in Brittany and a member of the French National Assembly, later a member of the House of Representatives, and in late life, the Senate.
The piano was restored in 1997 at Maison Erard by master restorationist Frits Janmaat in Amsterdam, and later conditioned by Edwin Beunk.
In recent years, some of Europe's finest historically-informed musical artists played this Pleyel in PBS concert performances in collaboration with the late Sergiu Luca.
Standing on substantial carved legs and brass wheels, the piano exudes a majestic presence through the graceful lines of its Second Empire style cabinet that embodies the period's aesthetics.
