Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte Omai Vase Table Lamp, Italy, 1956
By Max Ingrand
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Max Ingrand project, 1954, for Fontana Arte, Italy, white satin glass, small brass seal in the vase, metal base, white lacquered. Best known for its elegant and innovative vintage lighting pieces, the Milan-based firm Fontana Arte pioneered one of the key features of 20th-century and contemporary Italian design: the union of artistry and industry wrought by partnerships between creative talents — chiefly architects — and entrepreneurial businesses. Fontana Arte is further distinguished by having had as artistic director, in succession, four of Italy’s most inventive modernist designers: Giò Ponti, Pietro Chiesa, French transplant Max Ingrand and Gae Aulenti. The bread and butter of the glassmaking company that Luigi Fontana founded in 1881 was plate-glass panels for the construction industry. In 1930, Fontana met Ponti — then the artistic director of the Richard-Ginori ceramics workshop and the editor of the influential magazine Domus— at a biannual design exhibition that became the precursor to today’s Milan Design Triennale, and the two hatched an idea for a furniture and housewares firm. Fontana Arte was incorporated in 1932 with Ponti as its chief of design. He contributed several lamps that remain among the company’s signature works, including the orb-atop-cone Bilia table lamp and the 0024 pendant — a stratified hanging sphere. The following year, Fontana Arte partnered with the influential Milan studio glassmaker and retailer Pietro Chiesa, who took over as artistic director. Chiesa’s designs for lighting — as well as for tables and items including vases and ashtrays — express an appreciation for fluidity and simplicity of line, as seen in works such as his flute-shaped Luminator floor lamp and the 1932 Fontana table — an arched sheet of glass that is held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Six years after Chiesa’s 1948 death, the École des Beaux Arts–trained Max Ingrand took over as head of design at Fontana Arte. Ingrand brought a similarly expressive formal sensibility to wares such as lamps and mirrors, but he also had a masterful eye for the manipulation of glass surfaces — whether they be cut, frosted, acid-etched or sand-blasted. His classic design is the Fontana table lamp of 1954, which has a truncated cone shade and curved body, both of which are made of pure, chic white-frosted glass. Following Ingrand, the often-audacious Italian architect Gae Aulenti served as the company’s artistic director from 1979 to 1996, and while she generally insisted that furnishings take second place aesthetically to architecture, she made an exception for Fontana Arte pieces such as the Tavolo con Ruote series of glass coffee and dining tables on wheels...

Vaso anemone
By Patricia Urquiola
Located in Sant'agata De' Goti, BN
In collaboration with the school Istituto Caselli and the Royal Factory of Capodimonte, Patricia Urquiola designed a limited edition of porcelain artworks that tell a story of alchemy and experimentation. The collection is produced by Made in Edit. Hybrida is a project that translates manual skills and artisan talent into hybrid shapes and figures that populate the table set up. Traditional handcraft processes meet experimental ones, like the immersion in porcelain of unconventional materials, such as sponges and cotton, alongside the mosses from the Real Bosco that surrounds the Royal Factory. The name of the collection is Hybrida, conceived to reinterpret the eighteenth - century theme of great masterpieces of the traditional culture of Capodimonte ceramics...

Crystal 'Lens' Model 1774 Cocktail Table by Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte, 1959
By Fontana Arte, Max Ingrand
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This original Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte Model #1774 'Lens' coffee table was designed around 1958, this example was originally sold on November 23, 1959 making this part of the initial production years and a perfect collectors example. We acquired this table directly from the family of the original owner in Italy, photo of original receipt can be seen in this listing. Constructed with an enameled steel frame and brass leg inserts, topped with an internal concave mirrored crystal with a golden color/tone. This is a simply exquisite collectors piece and ideal for an art and design collector or investor or an interior designer working on a high-end luxury interior with a demanding client who wants only the best of the best. ABOUT THE DESIGNER: In 1908, Maurice Max-Ingrand, later known simply as Max Ingrand, was born in the town of Bressuire in western France. He went on to study in Paris at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts and École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs with Jacques Grüber and Charles Lemaresquier. In 1931, Ingrand married Paulette Rouquié, with whom he pursued glass etching and began exhibiting his works. This led to several private stained-glass commissions for Ingrand, including Notre-Dame de Paris and other cathedrals throughout France. Ingrand's nascent career was interrupted by World War II when he was drafted for military service in 1939. From 1940 to 1945, Ingrand was held as a German prisoner. Upon his release, Ingrand returned to Paris, divorced his wife, and, in 1946, married Marie-Alberte Madre-Rey; the couple would later have two children together. Quickly reestablishing himself as a leader in the field of stained glass, Ingrand produced windows and other decorative installations for churches in France and internationally. At the same time, Ingrand sought to apply his glass research and insights to the field of modern design, starting with lighting fixtures. He was named artistic director for Italian design house Fontana Arte in 1954. Over the next 13 years, Ingrand would create various iconic lamps, chandeliers, sconces, vases, tables, and other interiors, which masterfully achieve a balance between ornateness and minimalism. In 1968, Ingrand was chosen as the president of the French national lighting association and he also founded Verre Lumière ('True Lighting...

Max Ingrand Midcentury White Opaline Glass Table Lamp for Fontana Arte, 1954
By Fontana Arte, Max Ingrand
Located in Roma, IT
Large "1853" model midcentury white opaline glass table lamp. This masterpiece was the first model designed by Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte in Italy during 1954. This large pice has both the structure and the base in painted metal. The body is in white opaline glass, while the lampshade is new fabric. This piece includes the first two-way switch, for body and lampshade. Bibliography: Giuliana Gramigna, "Repertorio dell Design Italiano 1950-2000", p. 39, illustrated. Maurice Max-Ingrand, better known as Max Ingrand (20 December 1908, Bressuire – 25 August 1969, Paris) was a French artist and decorator, known for his work in studio glass and his stained glass windows. He was educated at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts and École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, studying under Jacques Grüber and Charles Lemaresquier. He married Paulette Rouquié (1910-1997) in 1931. He worked with his wife in glass etching, exhibiting work at the 21st Société des artistes décorateurs in 1931. Ingrand began to work in stained glass windows for private commissions. His first church windows were for Sainte-Agnès, Maisons-Alfort and participating in the design for Notre-Dame de Paris in 1937. He was drafted for military service in 1939 and fell into captivity at Hoyerswerda in May 1940. He returned from captivity only in 1945. He divorced his wife in 1946 and married Marie-Alberte Madre-Rey, with whom he had two children. He was artistic director of Milano interior design company Fontana Arte during 1954–1967. He was elected president of the French scouting association (Association Française de l'Éclairage) in 1968. He founded the company Verre Lumière, one of the first producers of halogen lamps, in 1968. Ingrand created numerous church stained glass windows during the late 1940s to 1960s (in some cases replacing windows that had been destroyed in World War II) including windows in Pontoise Cathedral (1955), Strasbourg Cathedral (1956), the chapels of Château de Blois (1957), Château d'Amboise, Château de Chenonceau and Château de Caen, Saint-Pierre de Yvetot (at 1046 m² the largest stained glass window in Europe), Saint-Pierre de Montmartre, Rouen Cathedral, Beauvais Cathedral, Saint-Malo Cathedral, Tours Cathedral, Church of the Jacobins, Münster Cathedral (1961), Liège Cathedral (1968), São Paulo Cathedral, Washington National Cathedral (with Claude Serre...
