John Lochhead "the Trysting Place" Oil on Canvas in Period Frame
Located in San Francisco, CA
A pretty oil on canvas by John Lochhead (1868-1921) a listed British artist born in 1868. The style of the painting is classic Victorian with a slightly naughty title on the back label "The Trysting Place". The piece depicts a well-dressed young woman seated on a bench in a charming bucolic garden setting with grazing sheep on a riverbank. Large Signed Native American Hopi Original Mudhead Kachina Katsina Doll on Stand
By Native American Art
Located in Studio City, CA
A wonderfully handcrafted/detailed and decorated Native American Hopi Mudhead Kachina doll. Quite an unusually large work. A striking piece overall. Hand painted with leather and possibly turquoise (necklace) accompaniment. Hopi katsina figures, also known as kachina dolls, are figures carved, typically from cottonwood root by the Hopi people. Initially, kachina dolls were made to instruct young girls and new brides about katsinas or katsinam, the immortal beings that bring rain, control other aspects of the natural world and society, and act as messengers between humans and the spirit world. The Mudhead or Koyemsi figure is viewed as a clown/joker figure who is responsible for laughter and entertainment at Hopi dances and ceremonial events. He plays drums and games to keep his audience engaged. The piece is signed by the artist under the base. From an extensive collection of Native American objects and artifacts. Would be a great addition to any Native American Art...

19th Century Antique Painting "The Fortune Teller" by Henry Nelson O'Neil A.R.A
Located in Shippensburg, PA
Seated on the edge of the bed, two sisters shrink in fascination before their eerie guest, the mysterious visitor seated before the glow of the fire and offering them a glimpse of the future. O'Neil steeps the scene in tension with the heavy atmosphere of the elusive and supernatural. The fire seems to extend from the hearth through the fortune teller's arm as her outstretched hand glows in the flame. The full moon is glimpsing through the window and almost seems to cast the impossibly long harsh shadows throughout the room, these cool at first and then warmed by the light of the fire. The right seated sister is fragile and perhaps even unwell while the other gives her strength with an arm wrapped around her waist; there is a story captured in the scene beyond a simple visitation, one of heartache or of physical ailment that may be the reason for the late night visit. The surroundings are as brilliantly rendered as the exquisite figures with diaphanous silk hanging from the rafters, heirloom jewels on the side table and a Jacobean chair in the background. The work is signed lower left in a tidy red script "H. O'Neil" and dated somewhat illegibly "18...2". HENRY NELSON O'NEIL A.R.A (RUSSIAN/BRITISH, 1817-1880) Born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1817, Henry Nelson O'Neil specialized in paintings of literary and historical genre subjects. He came to England with his family in 1823 and in 1836 began his studies at the Royal Academy of Art, sending his first painting there for exhibition in 1838. During the early days of his career, he traveled throughout Italy with Alfred Elmore...

“Sheep at Rest in the Highlands” '1914' Antique Oil Painting by Robert Watson
By Robert Watson
Located in Shippensburg, PA
A rich and moving scene that captures the richness of the Highlands at golden hour with the sun dimming over the horizon and casting a diffused palette of pastels through the wisps of clouds overhead, this gorgeous painting is an exceptional example of Robert Watson's work with an unusually romantic atmosphere. A flock of eleven sheep rest among the tall flowing grasses of the Scottish Highlands on a hill overlooking a distant body of water, the breeze gently ruffling the wool along their backs. Likely captured in fall, the hills are warm with browns, greens and yellows, subtle hints of flowers and stones, reeds and bushes in the impressionistic landscape. The work is executed in oil on canvas and is signed lower right "R. Watson" and dated 1914. Born on March 9th of 1865 in Brighton, Sussex to animal painter William Watson (London, 1809-1871), Robert William Watson trained under his father along with his two older brothers, Charles (1837-1900) and William Junior (1847-1921) for what would become a family occupation. He and his brother William were the most successful of the family, all of whom focused primarily on Highland paintings...

Ledger Art, "Sioux Medicine Men" by James Black 'Cheyenne'
Located in Denver, CO
Original James black mixed-media traditional ledger style drawing depicting Sioux Medicine Men on horseback in full regalia. Oil based colored pencil on paper. Presented in a custom frame, outer dimensions measure 26 ¼ x 31 ¾ x ¾ inches. Image size is 17 ¾ x 23 ¾ inches. James Black (Southern Cheyenne/Arapaho and Oglala) is a Southern Cheyenne Sundance priest from Watonga, a small rural town in northwestern Oklahoma. Growing up in a traditional home and being influenced by the traditions of his people, James reflects his surroundings in his drawings. He wanted to pursue art but did not want to get into contemporary Native American Art such as drawing Indians with wolves and eagles. He knew his people did more traditional pictographic drawings known as ledger drawings. Studying more about this ledger art...
