How do you tell if ironstone is real?
1 Answer

To tell if ironstone is real, first turn the piece over, examine the markings on the bottom and use them to identify the maker. From there, you can learn about the identifying characteristics of that particular manufacturer using trusted online resources. Generally, ironstone has a weighty feel, and if struck gently with an object like the handle of a butter knife, it will produce a ringing sound. With this in mind, you may be able to determine whether or not your piece is ironstone. You will likely need to examine additional characteristics to discern whether or not your pottery is an authentic example of a particular maker's work. A certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer can also assist you with this process. Shop a selection of ironstone on 1stDibs.
