About the Item
Andrei Petrov is an American Artist of Russian origins. His paintings are the expression of his lifelong struggle to retain memories of his childhood and life.
He writes: "As a child I was involved in an accident that affected my memory and compelled me to paint. Ever since, I have been trying to reclaim what I lost through my work. These paintings probe the distortion, incompleteness and rare moments of clarity in the shadows of memory.
Each piece portrays the intrinsic struggle and selective inclusion or exclusion of details in the process of recollection. At times, sharpness occurs in the rear of the picture plane while the out of focus, obscured areas, exist in a larger scale toward the foreground and make reference to the inscrutable nature of long and short term memory."
This precious small work is one of those where Petrov's abstract landscapes have a more figurative accent, outlining shapes of what seems to be luscious tropical flowers in a countryside. The intensity of the blue and purple hues certainly adds to the exotic flavor of this work.

Andrei Petrov
Andrei Petrov is an American Artist of Russian origins. He lives and works in New York. Petrov states, "In my approach, two roads are taken: a natural, Hudson River School path of light and drama-filled grandeur that encounters energetically animated gestures, muscular surfaces, and bold strokes familiar in Abstract Expressionism. Beneath numerous glazes and opalescent layers swaths of paint dash about this stage and often emerge from the lower depths of which there are many levels. Freezing the action allows a probing slow-motion breakdown of the components that comprise the canvas. Think of a frozen lake: leaves, twigs, nuts, fish are all suspended in ice at different depths and angles. Piercing the surface, thick islets of paint interrupt a placid color field and create a vast nonlinear perspective from the root to the fruit of the gesture. Tension is created by the juxtaposition of animated bursts of paint with the slow contemplative layering found in paintings of the Hudson River School. The invitation to explore this amber-like world is now extended. Sometimes the brush is mightier than the pen."

William Black is a little known and underrated member of the St Ives artist group who, having worked as an architect after the Second World War, went on to work as an artist following the inheritance of money in the early 1950s.
