Largely considered the first American painter to execute a completely abstract painting, Arthur Dove endeavored throughout his career to remain true to his singular artistic vision. Although this is not to say he was without influence. Early in his career in 1907 he traveled to France where he took great interest in the work of the Fauves. Upon his return to the States in 1909 he met Alfred Stieglitz, with whom he would develop an enduring friendship and business relationship. In 1910 with Stieglitz's support Dove painted one of the first truly abstract paintings, which inaugurated the advent of abstraction in American art. For Dove the purpose of painting abstractly was to extract and capture the essence of the subject. These "essences" or "extractions," as they were called, were meant to symbolize the basic elements of the natural world: force, growth, life. Dove based his compositions on the pulsating energy of nature, and he used basic organic shapes to comprise his paintings. The bold contrasts of geometric forms set in open spaces acted as remarkable precedents for American's postwar abstractions. In Italy Goes to War all of the hallmarks of Dove's artistic style are present. Despite the work's small size, the composition barely contains the energy that emanates from the forms. He uses a highly worked line to create a sense of agitation, even anxiety. By abstracting the historical event Dove brilliantly captures the indecision, the chaos, and the perceived consequences of Italy's entry into the war. As ever Dove used the artistic method he developed and consistently maintained throughout his career, and in doing so created a work that speaks to his deep interest in the philosophies of modern art and life and a work of art's ability to capture and era's life force. Arthur Dove
Arthur Garfield Dove was an American artist. Born in Canandaigua on August 2, 1880, Dove is credited as being the first innovative abstract painter in America. Dove used a wide range of media, sometimes in unconventional combinations, to produce his abstractions and his abstract landscapes. Many of his abstractions showed obvious Oriental influence and were derived from landscape and organic subjects with color used freely and calligraphic lines emphasizing energy or force. Generally, Dove’s method was to make watercolor sketches outdoors and later oil paintings in his studio. Dove died on November 23, 1946, in Huntington.

The Philadelphia modernist Arthur B. Carles was a brilliant colorist and an extraordinarily innovative painter. Though Carles trained initially at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, soaking up the more conservative teaching of William Merritt Chase and Thomas Anshutz, he was deeply influenced by the avant-garde art scene in Paris during his first trip there in 1905. In 1907, Carles won the prestigious Cresson Traveling Scholarship, which enabled him to return to Paris for several more years. This experience had a profound impact on Carles as an artist; he was extremely affected by modern French painting, especially the work of Cezanne and Matisse, and by the time Carles returned home to Philadelphia in 1912, he was a confirmed modernist.
This small landscape sketch was probably painted early during Carles's career, and yet, it already reveals his strong interest in abstraction. Indeed, Landscape Abstraction demonstrates both his daring exploration of lyrical color harmonies as well as his interest in two-dimensional surface design. Painted loosely in the spontaneous medium of watercolor, Carles used thin washes and delicate pools of paint to suggest the foreground area and surrounding trees. His color palette is rich and expressive, ranging from pale greens and blues to deep red, yellow, and even purple.
In addition to his remarkable career as an artist, Carles was also an incredibly gifted teacher. He taught at PAFA from 1917 to 1925 and had a very deep impact on a number of his students such as Morris Blackburn, Quita Brodhead, and Jane Piper...
