About the Item
Being nearsighted from a young age, Audrey Stone is drawn to seeing things up close; her work entails detail in the making and her desire for visual intimacy. How craft and art are distinguished from one another is a fascination for Stone and her work often involves a tension of two parts, like the use of two mediums - thread and paint. For Stone this duality is an expression of existing in two places at once.
During her 30 year career, Stone has worked in many mediums, including painting, sculpture, drawing, mixed media and installation. Her work has been exhibited widely across the US as well as in Prague, London, Bulgaria, Paris and more recently Tokyo. Recent exhibits include a 2015 two-person show at Muriel Guepin Gallery, a solo exhibit of a thread based installation on Governor’s Island in 2014, and group shows at The Arkansas Art Center, Geoffrey Young Gallery, Kentler International Drawing Space, and Jeff Bailey Gallery. Her work is included in many private collections across the United States, in Hong Kong, as well as The Amateras Foundation in Sophia, Bulgaria and the Fidelity Investments Collection.
Stone was born and raised in New York City and has many memories of haunting museums, galleries and the studios of established artists while growing up. She studied painting at Pratt Institute and The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and received her BFA from Pratt Institute in 1986. In 1993 She received an MFA from Hunter College. Audrey Stone lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Audrey Stone
Audrey Stone is an American abstract artist. Her work explores color, line, materiality and process across multiple mediums and surfaces. She was born in New York City and currently lives and works in Brooklyn. Throughout her career, Stone has worked in multiple mediums, including site-specific installation, painting, drawing, sculpture and mixed media. Her works unfold on an intimate scale. Many of her works also incorporate a sewn element, adding handwoven lines of thread, string or floss to the surface. As images, the works by her confidently express color, pattern and line while as objects, they reveal something far more personal through their presence.
