About the Item

Earl Horter (American, 1883-1940) Three Still Life Studies Pencil on paper, 7 1/4 x 13 1/2 inches; Framed: 17 x 21 inches NOTE: while originally mounted with archival materials, the work was not encapsulated and the mat board has sagged somewhat. There is slight distress to frame. See primary photo. Estate stamp at lower right: “E. Horter” PROVENANCE: Estate of the artist; Elizabeth Lentz (Mrs. Earl) Horter; thence by descent The exhibition, "Mad for Modernism: Earl Horter and His Collection," held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1999, traced the history of Horter’s collection and included a selection of the artist’s own works (including selected sketches from the collection this work was drawn from); the exhibition’s catalogue by Innis Howe Shoemaker is the standard reference on the artist. Earl Horter began his career as an engraver of stock certificates and illustrator for a Philadelphia advertising agency. He studied etching at the Sketch Club in Philadelphia under James Fincken (1860–1943), and began to exhibit at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1915, the same year that he won a silver medal at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Joseph Pennell were important influences on Horter’s early work. His mature style was profoundly influenced by the modernism, especially Cubism, that he saw during his extensive travels in Europe. In addition to creating his own distinguished body of work, he amassed an important collection of avant garde art that was exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Arts Club of Chicago in 1934.

    By Edmund Daniel Kinzinger
    Located in Dallas, TX
Edmund D. Kinzinger was born in 1888, to an upper-middle class family in Pforzhein, Germany. In Munich he studied at the Kirr Schule and the Staatliche Akademie, and pursued graduate studies at the Academie Modern, Paris. Before serving in the German Army, Kinzinger was a master student of Adolph Holzel at the Staatcliche Akademie, Stuttgart; he returned to study under Henrich Waldschmidt after nearly five years of artillery service. Several of Kinzinger’s fellow students in Germany, such as Johannes Itten, would go on to be associated with the Bauhaus school. Coming into contact with all manner of artistic influences in Europe after World War One, Kinzinger’s work may be viewed as a “synthesis” of modernist styles. The influences of Abstract Expressionist, Cubist, and Futurist styles in Kinzinger’s work at this time are symptomatic of his contact with the likes of Hans Hofmann, Pablo Picasso, and Alexander Archipenko. Philip Van Keuren...
