John Rutherford Boyd, known simply as Rutherford Boyd, was born in Philadelphia and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before moving to New York City and attending the Art Students' League. He worked as an illustrator before turning to the fine arts and becoming a painter, sculptor, and art teacher. He exhibited mostly at the Art Institute of Chicago, and won prizes at the Dallas Art Association in 1940 and the Southern States Art League in 1941. Boyd was a member of the American Watercolor Society, the Salmagundi Club, and the Architectural League of New York. Late in life he settled in Leonia, New Jersey.
