Framed: 16 x 13 inches
Estate stamp lower right
Born in Philadelphia, Adolphe Borie was able to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1895 99) in his native city under William Merritt Chase (1849 1916) and Thomas Anshutz (1851 1912), and then at the Royal Academy of Munich (1899 1902) with Carl Marr (1858 1936). While in Europe he frequently visited Paris. The effect of French Impressionism, Paris Modernism, and the Munich School is plainly evident in Borie's loose brushwork and colorist approach. He is counted among the Philadelphia artists who rebelled against Thomas Eakins’ Academy traditions and introduced modern art to the city.
