About the Item

Bright and colorful abstract geometric watercolor with multicolor connected forms cascading in a dynamic vertical composition by Ellwood Graham (American, 1911-2007). Signed "GRAHAM" in the upper right corner, and "Ellwood Graham" on verso. Circa 1961-1966. The title "Indian Dance" was written on verso of the original mat, and has been preserved. Presented in a new cream acid-free mat and painted, green, wood frame with glass. Image, 19.75"H x 8.75"W, Sheet size: 20.5"H x 15"W Ellwood Graham (American, 1911-2007) was born in St. Louis, Missouri and attended the School of Fine Arts at Washington University. In 1934, Graham moved to Monterey, California, where he was active with the Federal Art Project during the Depression and painted numerous murals in state buildings. In 1937, Graham built a home studio in Monterey, where he carried out various commissions, including coastal watercolors for Senatorial offices in Washington DC and several pieces for John Steinbeck, including a portrait. Graham served in the Navy during World War II and in the 1950s lived between Monterey, New Mexico, the Caribbean, and Mexico. In 1956, he became a resident of Pebble Beach and exhibited widely including the San Francisco Art Association and the Carmel Art Association.
