Jacques Lipchitz
Study for Bull and Condor, unique Ink on gouache signed, segy collection, framed

1964

About the Item

JACQUES LIPCHITZ Study for Bull and Condor, 1964 Original Ink on gouache on Paper drawing and signed lower left front Unique Held in the original vintage frame This work is from the Collection of renowned art dealers and world authorities on African art Helena and Ladislav Segy, who were also close friends of Lipchitz. This work is a study for the sculpture "Bull and Condor", a maquette that is now in the permanent collection of the Tate Gallery. According to the Tate, "The poet Juan Larrea told Lipchitz about fiestas in Peru where a condor is bound to a bull so that they fight. Lipchitz said that he heard the story at a time when he was profoundly depressed by the rise of Nazism, and that: 'the bull and the condor, and particularly the human beings who delighted in their struggle, signified the insane brutality of the world.' The rough handling of this maquette embodies the violence of its subject. Although he acknowledged its potential, Lipchitz never made a larger-scale work on this theme." Jacques Lipchitz Biography A pioneering artist of the 20th century, Chaim Jacob Lipchitz (1891-1973) was born in Druskininkai, Lithuania. In 1909 Lipchitz moved to Paris to study at the École des Beaux-Arts and at the Académie Julian, and also attended drawing classes at the Académie Colarossi. Whilst in Paris he became acquainted with Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, and Juan Gris. Lipchitz frequented museums and became deeply interested in ancient and non-western art, and began collecting various artifacts. Following the Nazi occupation of Paris, Lipchitz escaped to New York, where he continued to sculpt until his death. He is buried in Har Hamenuhot, Jerusalem.

Judith Brown (December 17, 1931 – May 11, 1992) was a dancer and a sculptor who was drawn to images of the body in motion and its effect on the cloth surrounding it. She welded crushed automobile scrap metal into energetic moving torsos, horses, and flying draperies. Brown attended Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York (B.A., 1954), where she learned to weld from her teacher, Theodore Roszak, a pioneering abstract expressionist sculptor. This is done in a style similar to Leonard Baskin.
