"Kyoto Snow" Geometric Abstract in Organic Neutrals with Playful Texture
Located in Baltimore, MD
Born December 12, 1965 in New York City, Michael's father owned a fine art moving business and his mother was a playright/director. They were surrounded by a diverse crowd of artists, such as filmmaker Gary Galsworth and painter Charles Mingus Jr.. Michael’s family moved across the USA, living in Madison and Santa Fe, and finally settled on Whidbey Island in Washington State. He spent his teenage years clearing a six acre plot of land with his family and building a seven sided geodesic dome house. Michael attended The Evergreen State College from 1983-87, studying film and photography. After graduation he took his camera and, over a ten year period, traveled extensively throughout Europe. While travelling he lived with, performed with, and documented circus performers and their communities. With no formal education as a painter, Michael draws on his eclectic past for inspiration - strongly influenced by his travels throughout Spain and France and rich colors and textures marked by time. Michael moved to St. Louis in 2001, where he works as a full time artist and raises his daughter and twin boys - a lifetime dream. His artwork is collected by individuals and corporations worldwide. "My paintings are meditative studies done with rich colors and bold graphic compositions - I often incorporate circles, grids and stripes. The universality and appeal of this symbology pulls the viewer in and holds them there to explore the subtle details. I try to create work that both captivates and calms. I work with abstractions because I want to put forth something universal that can be open to interpretations that are unique to each individual and can continue to evolve over time. A common theme in my painting is the relationship between rigid linear form and the organic flow of nature, order and disorder. I feel this is reflective in many ways of our society and peoples’ longing for something more than the sterility of technology in our modern lives. I believe inclusion of these two elements creates a certain universal harmony in many of my paintings. My pieces are also about the act of painting itself. I explore the physical nature of my materials and push to use unique and original methods of applying them. Many times there is strong evidence of my physical relationship to the canvas as I paint - using my body motion as a natural pendulum and the random arcs of my markings. Other works are done on wood panels that I coat with a plaster mixture and carve into before it sets. The geometrical markings bring to mind old nautical maps...

Moon (Graphic Abstract Painting in Red, Dark Teal & Yellow)
Located in Hudson, NY
Graphic abstract painting on paper in in complementary hues of red-orange, dark teal and yellow "Duo" by Jenny Kemp, painted in 2020 acrylic on linen over panel 14 x 11 inches Signed, verso Jenny Kemp’s abstract paintings are inspired by the artist’s desire to represent unseen phenomenon. With intricate and calculated line-work, the artist builds parallel layers against opaque backgrounds, while shifts in color and shape call attention to organic forms that give reference to the human body or atomic structures. Precise lines in light green arc over a layer of opaque moss green before colliding with forms of bright red-orange. A serene layer of dark teal complements these contrasting colliding forms, allowing a visual reprieve. The gouache painting on paper is complimented with a light wood frame, protected by non-glare glass. Wire is installed on the back for seamless hanging. About the artist: Jenny Kemp received a BS in Art from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and an MFA in Painting from the University at Albany. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country, most recently at Gold/Scopophilia* in Montclair, NJ and the Mandeville Gallery at Union College in Schenectady, NY. She has been featured in publications such as 100 Painters of Tomorrow published by Thames & Hudson, New American Paintings, The Huffington Post, Seattle’s City Arts, New York Times, and The New England Review. Kemp is also a recipient of the 2015 NYFA fellowship in painting and the 2015 Emerging Artist Award recipient from the Art Center of the Capital Region in Troy, NY. She sits on the board of Collar Works, an art space dedicated to the support of emerging and under-represented artists exhibiting challenging and culturally relevant contemporary artworks in Troy, NY where she lives and works. Infinity #54 (op art curvy monochrome red pen drawing wood detailed oriental)
Located in Quebec, Quebec
Cheoluy Kim’s practice examines the blurred frontier between perceived reality and fantasy. His work is informed by a childhood growing up on the border of North and South Korea in Gosung. There, he grew fascinated by all the fauna and flora he observed from his village surrounded by mountains, as well as the air balloons carrying political propaganda. He witnessed everything in the sky. This instilled a deeply rooted reflex to imagine a fantastical world beyond the physical frontiers he was bound by. Cheolyu Kim studied and obtained his master in sculpture, although, his current practice is entirely devoted to pen drawing on either paper or wood. Either bicolored or monochrome, the artist's typically limited chromatic palette gives room for an intense focus on detailed compositions, tonal gradients, and multiple perspectives. Kim’s background in sculpture is evident in the carved-like volumes of the elements in his drawings. Fine moire and cross-hatching are used for textures and shading in the drawn sections while the paper or wood is left fully exposed in other areas. Imaginary fauna and flora abound which contributes to a rather biomorphic aura to his work. All the while, indigenous, modern and futuristic architectural structures are erected and confuse any sense of fixed temporality. Rather, it projects us into a phantasmagorical universe where past, present and future collapse into one. Some perspectives are even skewed disrupting our contemplation. Totemic poles, origami-shaped creatures, and aquatic vegetation coexist fluidly in Kim’s oniric visions. His fine-detailed patterned dreamscapes engage the viewer actively; we are called upon to discover how do all the various entities interact over the multiple receding planes building up to Cheolyu's surrealist ecosystems. keywords; wood, pencil, rings, circles, moire, highly detailed, geometric abstraction, intentionally exposed support, line form and color, monochrome, curvilinear forms, Korean art, dynamism, contemporary minimalism, graphism, repetition, engaged with traditional Korean art...
