About the Item

Pierre MONTHEILLET (1923-2011) Composition in green and yellow Watercolor and gouache on paper Signed lower left Dimensions of the work: 50 x 65 cm Dimensions of the frame: 60 x 80 cm Pierre Montheillet, an artist from Lyon, son and grandson of art dealers, was introduced to painting on his own through the canvases exhibited in his father's gallery on rue Duguesclin. He discovered with great admiration the works of the painter Auguste Ravier (1814-1895) and became his official expert. For more than forty years, he was at the forefront of the visual arts scene in Lyon. Pierre Montheillet exhibited for the first time at the 1939 Salon d'Automne before turning definitively to non- figurative painting in the late 1940s. This is a pictorial tendency that distinguishes itself from imitative art but also from abstraction and whose manifesto exhibition "Twenty young painters of the French tradition" organized in 1941 by Jean Bazaine includes artists such as Alfred Manessier or Charles Lapicque. Defining himself above all as a landscape painter, Pierre Montheillet matured his plastic writing in contact with Hans Hartung whom he met in 1948. He developed a very personal language and quickly became the Lyon master of abstract landscape painting. He thus maintained a close relationship with the landscape without however worrying about any resemblance with the reality that was offered to him. Pierre Montheillet's works lose their figurative aspect while refuting the gratuity of the lyrical gesture proper to abstraction. Through a clever play of rhythms and colors, his works express the emotions felt in front of nature. He retranscribes on the canvas the sensations that the outside world gives him, thus leaving a great freedom of reading to the spectator. The gouache watercolor that we propose is composed of alternating large flat areas of light and shadow in an order apparently more intuitive than thoughtful. The painter expresses the spontaneity of the emotions felt in front of nature and the particular landscape which occupies him at this precise moment while preserving the control of the gesture proper to his manner.

Untitled: Yellow, Green and Black Lithograph
By Marjorie S. Kubach
Located in New York, NY
Marjorie Shaw Kubach (American), "Untitled: Yellow, Green & Black Lithograph, Abstract Lithograph signed in Pencil, 26 x 19, Late 20th Century Colors: Yellow, Green, Black Allen Kubach and Marjorie Shaw Kubach were two married artists who explored their artistic styles together throughout their careers. The artists showed their works largely throughout New Jersey and New York, sometimes joining together for the same exhibits. The works that Detour Gallery has acquired are representative of the pair’s time in which they explored abstraction. These works were made in a postwar era, following the art world’s shifted focus on New York as the center for new modern art. Art at this time was evolving, and the experimentation of abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction, and minimalism evidently paved the path for later artists such as Allen and Marjorie. As noted in the New York Times by Vivian Reynor, Allen Kubach “specializes in strong colors, expressing them in vertical and diagonal grids laid one on top of another.” In such a manner, Allan reflects these contemporary ideals that were taking New York by storm in the 1960’s and 70’s. The linear focus and non objective use of color found in Allen’s work correlates to that of the pioneers of abstract and minimalistic work such as Sol Le Witt...
