About the Item

144, Pencil Drawing by Richard Lin 1933-2011, 1960 Additional information: Medium: Pencil 29 7/8 x 33 7/8 in 76 x 86 cm signed, dated and titled Emanating minimalist purity and characteristic precision, this example of Richard Lin’s work hints at the artist’s architectural training, with deceptively simple curvilinear forms charging across the surface of the work expelling energy and rhythm from the sparse pencil lines. Created in 1960 towards the beginning of his career, Lin had committed to art full-time only two years previously and had held his first solo exhibition at Gimpel Fils in 1959, a few years later becoming the first Chinese artist to take part in the prestigious exhibition Documenta 3, in Kassel, Germany. Lin’s work is known for fusing elements of ancient Eastern philosophy such as Taoism with the principles of the western modernist greats like Le Corbusier whom he studied when training to be an architect at Regent Street Polytechnic in London, influence of both are clearly evident in this example. Provenance Wenlock Fine Art; Private Collection, London. Born in Taichung, Taiwan, and brought up to be the heir to Wufeng Lin's fortune - one of the most influential families in the country, Lin was sent to the UK to be educated and to the disbelief of his family, he renounced his inheritance to become an artist. Having studied architecture at Regent St Polytechnic by day and painting by night, once he graduated in 1958 he turned to painting full-time. This experience undoubtedly influence the structured, minimalist style in which he works, as well as his predilection to work using plastic and metal. Early in his career he worked under the name Lin Show Yu, however, by 1959, and his first solo show at Gimpel Fils, London, he was exhibiting as Richard Lin. Soon his name was recognised internationally: he received an award at the 'Chinese Modern Sculpture Exhibition' organised by Taipei Fine Arts Museum and, in 1964, he was invited to participate in Documenta 3 in Kassel, Germany, becoming the first Chinese artist to take part in the prestigious exhibition. In 1967 Lin was chosen to participate in the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh, and along with Francis Bacon was awarded the William Frew Memorial Purchase Award. His wall pieces reveal a connection with the work of Donald Judd and more broadly, American minimalism, whilst his drawings and more painterly work point back to Chinese, Taiwanese ink drawings. Lin's work can be found in the public collections at the Tate Gallery, London, Arts Council, London, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and several public institutions internationally

Countably Infinite, 2022 by On Hansen Oil wax, acrylic, graphite, organic ink, and crayon on Awagami paper Image size: 35.03 in. H x 25.59 in. W Unframed ____________________________ On Hansen originally from Scandinavia is the pseudonym used by the photographer Cristian Hunter, a third-generation artist who has spent most of his professional career as a photographer. His work bears the traces of lived experiences, exploring the possibilities of formal abstraction, and seeking an organic experience between space and time through painting and photography. “There is no longer a single idea explaining everything, but an infinite number of essences giving meaning to an infinite number of objects. The world comes to a stop, but also lights up.” ― Albert Camus...
