About the Item

A New Model This graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco – 01-06-23’ serves as a caesura after my long series of landscapes and cityscapes. The last one depicting the Nieuwe Kerk in The Hague I sold yesterday. That’s a nice conclusion and I think it’s time to do something new or is it? Hmm, perhaps not. A return to female forms hardly is but the model surely is. You don’t know her yet. I know her from Instagram where she asked me to portray her. Her slender looks impressed me and during my landscape frenzy I looked at her reference pictures she sent me. I picked this one because of the attractive folds in the towel she holds in front of her body. A Straight Approach Looking back at some recent nudes I made I saw it’s quite some time since I drew them angularly. I think a real angular one was Neo Deco – 26-01-23. For that pose by my regular model I used heavy back lighting, something that’s completely missing here though. In fact the light in the photo comes from the front. Lucky for me the shadows in the folds and limbs were equally interesting. My choice for straight cubist contour delineations was right I think. They represent the straightness of the creases and wrinkles perfectly. Because of her slender appearance her body also seems to complement this straight approach. Neo Deco? So there you have it, a new one in the Neo Deco series. A kind of? To call it cubism would only deliver me people chasing after me stating it’s not cubism at all. No Picasso multi-perspectivism whatsoever. Is it decorative of nature? Hence the ‘deco’-link one might say. I think this style of mine is a perfect combination of impressionism, realism, art deco and cubism. If it’s roundish I call it roundism. I think the Deco-aspect shows in the repetitive series of diagonals in the towel folds on her belly. They contrast the vertical position of her body. The extrapolations into the negative space also are typical deco, I think. I rest my case now for the time being. SEO and the N-Word Sometimes I feel a bit clumzy but then again all -isms also are in their own particular way. In fact I’d rather not call it anything. But hey, I’m a struggling artist and I have to craft nifty SEO-proof texts in order to be found. In the past I simply called them ‘nude’ plus a date so I could tell one from the other. However, it proved to be an unsuccesful strategy. Social media sentinels often blocked me because of the ‘N-word’. Sadly I must conclude this art statement with this bitter conclusion. Facebook and Instagram forced me to this practise of alternative namegiving. I don’t mind. ‘Neo Deco’ is more specific than ‘nude’ and I like the sound of it. Any alternatives? Just Another Artistic Motif This graphite pencil drawing ˜Venus Lamenting “ 13-01-23 is a special one. It is an indictment of prudishness. My second to last one ˜Roundism “ 30-12-22 apparently shook up a bunch of people. Comments varied from great to ˜yet another tit pic. There also were prudes from various countries who scorned me for the subject nudity anyway. Throughout the years I became used to these reactions somehow. I also take into account the fact people from each and any nation are present on social media nowadays. With this variety comes a whole set of different opinions and views of life. I cherish them all. That is, as long as they cherish my opinion back. If they dont, then this art statement is for all those who lack the word reciprocity in their dictionary. Climbing the Barricades Personally I think the nude can be as much an artistic motif as any other. In fact I dont complain in the least about a world of other motifs. One could like to depict golden retrievers, red roses and other darling, save and sound themes. I see them on a daily basis on Instagram and Facebook among others. I probably wouldnt have made a big fuss because of contempt shown in the past. Thats what an artist is all about. I even like to provoke with my nudes a bit. A bit of sexiness but not too much. Just to be able to deny the presence of too much of it by underligning artistic aspects as well. Hmm, a bit of risque here an there. I love it! Why climb the barricades once again? Heres why. Movement Another graphite pencil drawing ‘Art Deco Nude – 23-08-22’, inspired by again a smashing picture by Walter Bird. The last drawing shows a seated lady. Contrasts are always on my mind though. Not in the style but in movement this time. What attracked me in the motif was the angular position of the female form. I am not sure whether she stood still like this but it looks like some ritual dance. I can ask my Spanish model Julia who is a dancer to strikes these kinds of poses. All induced by Walter! Extrapolate Them The bodily features almost took up a perfect square. However, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to end up with too much negative space around her. Therefor, extrapolating her features into the negative space came to my aid. The planes that are born from this process support the overall expression of her moves, I think. Some of them I hached up to complete darkness, other to midtones. Vice versa I did in the positive form as well. The most contrasting tonal values (completely light / dark) I placed within the body. I wanted only mildly distracting or diffuse the viewer’s attention. This way I found a perfect balance. Emotional and Expressive Someone on called...

  • Female Nude Study Charcoal and Red Chalk Drawing by Georges Lucien Guyot
    By Georges Lucien Guyot
    Located in Atlanta, GA
French artist Georges Lucien Guyot (1885 - 1972) signed this charming woman nude study. This painting features a lovely design of a woman getting out of the bath and wiping with a towel. Only a few lines in charcoal and red chalk or sanguine mark the silhouette and posture and capture the model's expression. The red color emphasizes the color of the skin and imbues the lascivious movement. The sketches of the bath towel are only suggested, but it gives the whole thing a lot of softness and an incredible illusion of movement. Signed on the bottom left corner: Georges Lucien Guyot. The artist used a technique named "sanguine," or red chalk or crayon. The drawing has a blood-red, reddish, or flesh coloration. It has been popular for centuries for drawing employed by 15th and 16th Century artists such as the great masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. The drawing is ornate with a contemporary wood frame with a red and yellow deep-textured pattern and an off-white matte with acrylic glass protection. Measurements: With Frame: 20.87 in. wide (53 cm) x 28.35 in. high (72 cm) x 1 in. deep (2.5 cm). View alone: 11.44 in. wide (29 cm) x 18.94 in. high (48 cm). About: Georges Lucien Guyot (born December 10, 1885, in Paris, where he died December 31, 1972) is a French artist, sculptor, and painter. From an early age, Georges Guyot showed artistic abilities, but the modest conditions of his parents did not allow him to study art. So he did his apprenticeship with a wood sculptor. Guyot excelled in copying works from the 15th, 16th, and 17th Centuries but rapidly showed an attraction for nature. This attraction led him to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, where he could study wild animals and translate his observations into sculptures and paintings. A familiar figure of Montmartre, Georges Guyot was the guest of the Bateau-Lavoir from the time of Cubism. In 1931, he joined the group of Twelve, created by François Pompon and Jane Poupelet...
