About the Item

Straight Lines and Curves This graphite pencil drawing ‘Neco Deco – 09-02-23’ is a representation of the female body in both straight lines and curves. After the last one I wanted to continue with an almost total blackness in the background. I had a bit of solarization in mind though. Last year I made a series under this name. Blue Velvet – 09-07-22 was the one to finished it off with. Lately I have become a bit reluctant adding to previous series and extend them to the max. Somehow I have the feeling to lay all these series to rest, like Roundism, Solarization and Art Deco Nude. One of the reasons is that I find my inner urge to classify my art almost silly. Must be my background as a lawyer but it’s also because of the n*de word. Social media sentinels like to block me because of using it in the title. Deviantart Well, Neo Deco is just as good as any title and I like the sound of it. It also reflects the essence of the drawing at hand. Straight lines, roundish curvatures and solarized planes are a direct reminder to all things nice from the 1920s and 1930s. Then, on Deviantart I saw a pose I liked and this drawing is loosely based on that. I changed a lot of things though. I inversed the tonality and exaggerated knee caps and elbows dramatically. Eventually only the pose came out as the same, even though it is radically differently rendered. The suggestion of a frame comes from my previous drawing ‘Venus Lamenting – 13-01-23’. It’s not equally elaborated though and I thought it would be fun to draw some body parts over it. Free Sketching This is how things turned out to become when you are free sketching on sight without taking proportional measures. That’s not always my modus operandi because usually I am more precise. However, some time ago I cranked up the frequency of model sketching. I must say, I am feeling confident again to sketch without thinking too much. Somehow, by overanalyzing proportions I feel the process of finding and creating is a bit blocked. Of course these live model drawing sessions are meant for practising your hands only. An artist like me needs not think of creating a sellable product during such a session. On the other hand, I have sold pastels I made through live drawing in the past. Anyway, this one is just another attempt to practise my hand and come up with a great artistic idea. Perhaps one day you will buy it. Just Another Artistic Motif This graphite pencil drawing ˜Venus Lamenting “ 13-01-23 is a special one. It is an indictment of prudishness. My second to last one ˜Roundism “ 30-12-22 apparently shook up a bunch of people. Comments varied from great to ˜yet another tit pic. There also were prudes from various countries who scorned me for the subject nudity anyway. Throughout the years I became used to these reactions somehow. I also take into account the fact people from each and any nation are present on social media nowadays. With this variety comes a whole set of different opinions and views of life. I cherish them all. That is, as long as they cherish my opinion back. If they dont, then this art statement is for all those who lack the word reciprocity in their dictionary. Climbing the Barricades Personally I think the nude can be as much an artistic motif as any other. In fact I dont complain in the least about a world of other motifs. One could like to depict golden retrievers, red roses and other darling, save and sound themes. I see them on a daily basis on Instagram and Facebook among others. I probably wouldnt have made a big fuss because of contempt shown in the past. Thats what an artist is all about. I even like to provoke with my nudes a bit. A bit of sexiness but not too much. Just to be able to deny the presence of too much of it by underligning artistic aspects as well. Hmm, a bit of risque here an there. I love it! Why climb the barricades once again? Heres why. Movement Another graphite pencil drawing ‘Art Deco Nude – 23-08-22’, inspired by again a smashing picture by Walter Bird. The last drawing shows a seated lady. Contrasts are always on my mind though. Not in the style but in movement this time. What attracked me in the motif was the angular position of the female form. I am not sure whether she stood still like this but it looks like some ritual dance. I can ask my Spanish model Julia who is a dancer to strikes these kinds of poses. All induced by Walter! Extrapolate Them The bodily features almost took up a perfect square. However, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to end up with too much negative space around her. Therefor, extrapolating her features into the negative space came to my aid. The planes that are born from this process support the overall expression of her moves, I think. Some of them I hached up to complete darkness, other to midtones. Vice versa I did in the positive form as well. The most contrasting tonal values (completely light / dark) I placed within the body. I wanted only mildly distracting or diffuse the viewer’s attention. This way I found a perfect balance. Emotional and Expressive Someone on called...

  • Female Nude Study Charcoal and Red Chalk Drawing by Georges Lucien Guyot
    By Georges Lucien Guyot
    Located in Atlanta, GA
French artist Georges Lucien Guyot (1885 - 1972) signed this charming woman nude study. This painting features a lovely design of a woman getting out of the bath and wiping with a towel. Only a few lines in charcoal and red chalk or sanguine mark the silhouette and posture and capture the model's expression. The red color emphasizes the color of the skin and imbues the lascivious movement. The sketches of the bath towel are only suggested, but it gives the whole thing a lot of softness and an incredible illusion of movement. Signed on the bottom left corner: Georges Lucien Guyot. The artist used a technique named "sanguine," or red chalk or crayon. The drawing has a blood-red, reddish, or flesh coloration. It has been popular for centuries for drawing employed by 15th and 16th Century artists such as the great masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. The drawing is ornate with a contemporary wood frame with a red and yellow deep-textured pattern and an off-white matte with acrylic glass protection. Measurements: With Frame: 20.87 in. wide (53 cm) x 28.35 in. high (72 cm) x 1 in. deep (2.5 cm). View alone: 11.44 in. wide (29 cm) x 18.94 in. high (48 cm). About: Georges Lucien Guyot (born December 10, 1885, in Paris, where he died December 31, 1972) is a French artist, sculptor, and painter. From an early age, Georges Guyot showed artistic abilities, but the modest conditions of his parents did not allow him to study art. So he did his apprenticeship with a wood sculptor. Guyot excelled in copying works from the 15th, 16th, and 17th Centuries but rapidly showed an attraction for nature. This attraction led him to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, where he could study wild animals and translate his observations into sculptures and paintings. A familiar figure of Montmartre, Georges Guyot was the guest of the Bateau-Lavoir from the time of Cubism. In 1931, he joined the group of Twelve, created by François Pompon and Jane Poupelet...
