About the Item
Cette aquarelle a été réalisée en 1895 par le dessinateur et illustrateur Adolphe Giraldon (1855-1933) pour encadrer le sonnet "Maris Stella" du poète José-Maria de Heredia, qui a d'ailleurs signé sous le texte.
En lien avec les vers qu'elle illustre, la composition représente une Bretonne les mains serrées sur son chapelet, priant pour le retour des pêcheurs dont on aperçoit les voiliers en arrière-plan. Avec ses ornements végétaux, sa stylisation et la calligraphie utilisée, elle s’inscrit pleinement dans le style Art nouveau de la fin du siècle.
Reproduite dans la "Revue Illustrée" en juin 1895, elle accompagnait un article de Paul Verlaine sur le poète parnassien et faisait partie d'une série de quatre sonnets des "Trophées" illustrés de compositions en couleurs gravées d’après Giraldon.

Adolphe Giraldon
Adolphe Giraldon was born in Marseille, France. A pupil of François Louis Français and Luc-Olivier Merson, Giraldon moved to live in Glasgow, where he became Professor of Decorative Arts at the Glasgow School of Art. The Beaux Arts in Toulouse has several Giraldon’s views of Venice. As a lithographer, Adolphe Giraldon was a contributor to L'Estampe Moderne.
