Ce tableau dépeint l'atmosphère d'une soirée au théâtre ou à l'Opéra à Paris à la Belle Époque.
Formé à l’École des beaux-arts de Paris dans l’atelier d’Isidore Pils, Adrien Marie (1848-1891) est admis à partir de 1867 au Salon, où il expose des tableaux et des aquarelles. Il intègre également la Société des aquarellistes français à partir de 1887.
En parallèle de cette carrière officielle, il travaille comme illustrateur pour des éditeurs de livres et pour plusieurs revues. Familier des salles de spectacle, Adrien Marie retranscrit dans cette petite esquisse la mondanité de ces soirées, où les spectateurs se rendent autant pour voir que pour être vus, ainsi que l’atmosphère de séduction et de galanterie prévalant avant le début des spectacles et durant les entractes. Au lieu de se concentrer sur ce qui se passe sur scène, Adrien Marie a choisi de représenter l’intérieur d’une loge où trois jeunes femmes élégantes, en robes décolletées, cheveux relevés et éventail à la main, conversent avec trois hommes en habit noir, boutonnière, plastron et nœud papillon blanc, tandis qu’un quatrième homme, plus âgé, se tient à l’écart.
Pour peindre cette petite scène mondaine, le peintre utilise un clair-obscur en camaïeu de bruns, dont seuls se détachent la touche rose d’une fleur plantée dans un chignon et un rayon de lumière verte venant se poser sur le front de l’homme le plus âgé.
