About the Item

Original watercolor with graphite tracings of a solitary hunter in the field by the British artist, George Anderson Short. Signed bottom right. Circa 1940. Overall cream mat and thin gold leaf frame 13.75 by 10.5inches in fine condition. Provenance: A Florida estate. About the artist: George Anderson Short was born in Kirkharle, Northumbria in 1856, his family moved to Halifaz where George married Alice Spencer, sister of the owner of Spencers Wool Staplers. George worked as a carpet designer at Dean Clough Mills in Halifax and lived in Manor Heath Halifax. In 1907 George moved to Snaith, and later returned to live in Saville Park Halifax in 1927. George was a prolific artist, during his life he painted about 2000 pieces of work in oils and watercolours, mostly concentrating on sporting scenes, wild fowl, hunt meets, gypsy scenes and local scenes in Snaith and Halifax, including the Halifax horse market. He sold very little of his work other than a few commission pieces, the most well known of which was bought in 1901 by Messrs Frost and Reel of Bristol as a companion to a picture entitled "The Highland Raiders" by Joseph Farquharson R.A. George Anderson Short died in 1946 and his extensive collection of works (approximately 2000 paintings) was later sold be his daughter in about 1988. Works by George Anderson Short are highly sought after by collectors of his work in the West Yorkshire region and examples very seldom come to market.
