Karin Krohne Kaufman
Original sketch for "The Garden" signed by Karin Krohne Kaufman, portrait, woman

1993

About the Item

10 1/4" x 8 3/4" art 18 1/2" x 17 1/4" frame This sketch for 'The Garden' is an original drawing in sepia by American artist Karin Krohne Kaufman. Being a sketch, the drawing offers insight into Kaufman's working method and thought process: lines surround the hood covering the woman's face, each seeking the form the hood would eventually take. In the final iteration, 'The Garden' was a color pencil drawing, containing color at all points in the spectrum. In this study, the artist has also added rosiness to the woman's cheeks, giving it the same sense of life as the final drawing. Kaufman calls her works "Illustrated Dreams" because this is the experience that they most closely resemble. Her illustrations are exquisitely detailed, often depicting young Asian women and capturing a fantasy-like image of nature and children. Like dreams, these drawings contain universal symbols, the kind which psychologist Carl Jung termed 'archetypes.' Although she has personal interpretations of the drawings, she feels that the universal symbolism which the drawings contain give them a meaning which is unique for each individual. 10.25 x 8.75 inches, drawing 18.5 x 17.25 inches, frame Signed and dated lower right Entitled lower left Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting and mounting, and Conservation Clear glass to inhibit UV fading. Housed in a gold finish wood moulding. Drawing in overall good condition, as received from artist; some scattered marks and planar distortion from handling; some wear to gold finish of frame. Karin Krohne Kaufman was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her serious interest in art began at the age of four, when she found herself drawing whenever she had the chance. Children’s book illustrations were a particular interest to Kaufman. She was drawn to vivid colors and the way in which the subjects appeared animated. Through the 1970’s Kaufman independently studied and analyzed illustration and from there, developed her own style, primarily working with pen and ink, eventually switching to drawing with graphite in the late 1970’s. From 1980-1985 Kaufman attended the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee to obtain a degree in nursing, while also taking two semesters of basic drawing, and one semester of life drawing. During her years in college, she became familiar with psychologist Carl Jung’s work, specifically in the areas of archetypes and dream symbolism. She also studied world religions and took particular interest in Native American philosophy. These interests greatly influence Kaufman’s art. They are reflected in the universal symbols that she uses in her drawings, and indirectly her reverence for the earth.
