Figurative, still life chalk drawing of black high heels on vintage collaged music sheets.
Artwork measures 29 x 33 inches
30 x 37 inches framed, deckle edge paper is floated in natural wood moulding with glass.
This modern, graphic chalk drawing on collaged vintage music sheets was made by Louise Laplante in 2018. The vivid silhouettes of high heels are stenciled onto vintage music sheets with black chalk. The background made of collaged music sheets helps the viewer visualize a song the shoes could be dancing to. In certain segments the stenciled images are delicately brushed over with a thin wisp of chalk which adds a delicate textured effect to the drawing. The mixed media work is complimented with a modern natural wood frame.
About the artist:
Mixed media artist, Louise Laplante, will exhibit new drawings on collaged pages of of vintage paper. Interested in blending the old world with the new, Laplante combines her original images with ephemera of the past, enticing a conversation about it’s “relevancy to the present.” Her compositions begin with vintage book pages, personal handwritten letters, sheet music, or instruction from old guides on etiquette or science. While the text itself is weighted with reference to a particular subject, the visual of the typed or handwritten words and printed illustrations establish a unique pattern. These layered backgrounds are superimposed with opaque charcoal drawings that are inspired by the themes read between the lines. Most recently, the artist has opted for larger scale work, combining multiple sheets of vintage paper to expand her unique motifs. Laplante exhibits across the Northeast and has shown with Carrie Haddad Gallery for more than ten years.

Joy Taylor’s paintings transform botany into a personal vision. Her recent series on canvas, playfully titled the “Boo-K” paintings, defy traditional still life depictions that often seek to tame and order the objects of the world. On the contrary, Taylor’s subjects are never still. Her floral forms have the crisp, clean qualities of cut paper; sharp, decisive lines slice through blocks of pure pigment to create defined edges of leaves, vines and blossoms. The colors are constructed as well as the form. Her exuberant palette of oranges, blues, magenta and green echo the complimentary colors favored by the Fauvists. Color is an element in and of itself in her work. This balance of sparkling color and form is irrepressible, at times disconcerting and even dangerous in its boldness.
