About the Item

"The Dance" by Ludovico Lipparini is a beautifully rendered work on paper in the classical tradition using graphite and gouache and created in the first half of the nineteenth century. It's handsomely framed with archival materials and an elegant French mat. The drawing is not signed but the work is inscribed on the verso, "Professor Lipparini" and it is also identified on the front with an early handwritten label. History and portrait painter, Ludovico Lipparini was born in Bologna in 1800. By twenty-five he had attained such a reputation that the Academy of Bologna elected him an honorary member. Invited to Rome and Naples, he painted the portraits of distinguished persons before moving to Venice in 1822, where he studied art, married the daughter of his teacher and in 1838 became a professor at the Accademia di Belle Arti. Lipparini was a sought-after portraitist and counted Napoleon's siser, Elisa, as well as Venice's aristocracy and bourgeoisie among his clients. His wife, Anna Matteini, was also a professional painter, specializing in landscapes. Lipparini's works are in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Vienna Museum and the Cathedral at Gran in Hungary.
