20th century

About the Item

Watercolor by Madeleine RENAUD (1900-1994), France. Wreath of Carnations. With frame: 60.2x89 cm - 23.7x35 inches without frame: 73x43 cm - 28.7x16.9 inches. Signed "Madeleine Renaud" lower right (see photo). The horizontal line at the bottom is a reflection in the glass pane which protects the work. Coming from a bourgeois background, Lucie Madeleine Renaud is the daughter of Louis Paul Renaud and Anne Pauline Lucie Derigon. She entered the prestigious Comédie-Française at the age of 21, out of a desire to have a job and be independent. In 1922 she married the actor Charles Granval with whom she had a son, Jean-Pierre Granval. On the boards, she most often plays the role of ingenuous. Her notoriety increased with the advent of talking cinema. In 1936, during the shooting of the film Hélène, she met the actor and director Jean-Louis Barrault, who became her second husband on September 5, 1940. In 1943, they collaborated on the creation of Paul Claudel's Satin shoe, which he puts on a show. After performing 127 roles, she left the Comédie-Française in 1946 to found the Renaud-Barrault Company with her husband, who lived at the Marigny theater. The actress created the Winnie de "Oh les beaux jours" (Happy days) by Samuel Beckett in 1963, a role she would take on until the end of her career. She plays Jean Genet, Marguerite Duras, François Billetdoux. Meanwhile, her husband became director of the Odéon-Théâtre de France theater, which he had to leave after the events of May 1968. From 1968, the Renaud-Barrault company moved and moved to the Élysée Montmartre, boulevard Rochechouart. Madeleine Renaud moved away from the Company for a time to play alongside Claude Régy in "L'Amante anglaise" by Marguerite Duras. Then she is Maude in Harold and Maude, a role she will play for a long time, after the company's installation in the disused Orsay station and then at the Rond-Point theater. Madeleine Renaud died in 1994 at the American Hospital in Neuilly-sur-Seine, seven months after her husband. She is buried with her husband Jean-Louis Barrault in the Passy cemetery (Paris). She is the aunt, by marriage, of actress Marie-Christine Barrault and the great-aunt of historian Antoine Boulant.
