About the Item
The present work exhibits a storytelling and illustration art style created before the mass communications age. It was rendered in a flat linear style by the highly talented Maginel Wright Enright Barney, the sister of Frank Lloyd Wright, for a Harper's Weekly interior story, "The Blue Hood." The illustration captures the energy of a peak moment of drama. An aggressive young boy with fists out lunges toward a weaker boy with tears running down his face, who finds safety in his mother's arms. Facial expressions and body gestures effectively advance the story's narrative. Signed lower right. Maginel Wright Enright Barney
Maginel Wright Enright Barney was born on June 19, 1881, Weymouth. She was the sister of architect Frank Lloyd Wright and the illustrator of several children’s books, including those of L. Frank Baum. She has also done cover designs and illustrations for numerous magazines throughout the 1920–40. She was largely responsible for revolutionizing the quality of illustration in children’s books. She was featured on The Illustrator in America, 1860-2000 by Walt Reed on page 165. Enright died on April 18, 1966, in East Hampton.
