Margaret Evans Price
Children's Book Illustrator - Mother Goose, Children and Flowers

1920 circa

About the Item

Mother Goose is a French fairy tale and later of English nursery rhyme. In this illustration, we see an oversized Goose in a yellow bonnet elevated on a step and engaging with an attentively curious young girl and young boy. Large vases of flowers frame them. Titled in pencil center bottom: "Goosey, Goosey Gander. Where do you wander? Signed Margaret Evans Price lower right. Framed and matted under glass. Some light toning with a small spot of foxing otherwise presents well for a work over a 100 years old. Margaret Evans Price (March 20, 1888 – November 20, 1973) was a U.S. toy manufacturer. With her husband, Irving Price, and Herman Fisher, she co-founded Fisher-Price Toys in 1930. Margaret Evans was a children's book illustrator and artist. She became the first Art Director of Fisher-Price and designed push-pull toys for the opening line, based on characters from her children's books. Family Margaret was a member of the wealthy Evans family of New York, who for a time had an effective monopoly on the building material industry in the City. Margaret's Brother Heathcliff expanded his Father's business operations to include a bookbinding business which at its peak encompassed a complex of buildings on East 12th Street in Manhattan. Margaret's Cousin was Republican Politician and Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court Charles Evans Hughes. After getting married, she lived with her family in East Aurora, New York. In 2014, her former residence is being considered for demolition or historical preservation Career Margaret Evans began her art career at an early age, and sold her first illustrated story to the Boston Journal in 1900. She attended high school in Charlestown, Boston, and went on to study at the Massachusetts Normal Art School. From there, she went on to study at the Boston Academy of Fine Arts under the tutelage of Joseph DeCamp and Vesper George. Before she married Irving Price, Evans worked as a freelance artist in New York City, publishing with Rand McNally, Harper & Brothers and Stecher Lithography [Rochester, NYAfter the formation of Fisher-Price, Margaret went on to exhibit her work in many galleries nationally. She was also published in Nature Magazine, the Women's Home Companion, and Pictorial Review.

Child and Mother Chicken Greet Birth of a Chick, Children's Book Illustration
By Alice and Martin Provensen
Located in Miami, FL
Welcome to the World. A blue-eyed child in a wide-rimmed hat with flowers and an adult chicken greet the emergence of a chick. The charming illustration is titled " Karen and Etta ( the chicken ) have a Little Chick " Notice the whimsical touch of a piece of egg shell that sits on the chicks head like a little white hat. Signed lower right. unframed Alice Rose[1] Provensen (née Twitchell; August 14, 1918[2] – April 23, 2018[3]) and Martin Provensen (July 10, 1916 – March 27, 1987) were an American couple who illustrated more than 40 children's books together, 19 of which they also wrote and edited.[4] According to Alice, "we were a true collaboration. Martin and I really were one artist."[4] Biographies Their early lives were similar. Both were born in Chicago and moved to California when they were twelve.[5] Both received scholarships to the Art Institute of Chicago, and both attended the University of California, though at separate campuses. After college, Alice went to work with Walter Lantz Studio, the creators of Woody Woodpecker, and Martin took work with the Walt Disney Studio, where he collaborated on Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Dumbo. The pair met in 1943 when Martin, working as a creator of training films for the American military, was assigned to the Walter Lantz Studio. They were married in 1944 and settled in Washington, D.C., where they worked on war-related projects. After the war, they moved to New York City where a friend helped them get their first job, illustrating The Fireside Book of Folk Songs.[5] They illustrated several Little Golden Books including The Color Kittens by Margaret Wise Brown (1949). In 1952, Tony the Tiger, designed by Martin, debuted as a Kellogg's mascot. The Provensens were a runner-up for the 1982 Caldecott Medal as illustrators of A Visit to William Blake's Inn by Nancy Willard...

Early 20thC Watercolor and Gouache. 'Gentlemen at the Races, Point to Pointing'.
By Sir Alfred James Munnings
Located in Cotignac, FR
Early 20th century watercolour of a gentleman on horseback with other riders in the background apparently signed or titled 'Count A de Monthaus'. Signed or titled bottom left. Presented in fine period gilt frame under glass. The artist has captured a moment of pause, the gentlemen rider in his fine clothes and bowler hat regarding his surroundings as his fellow riders continue the chase behind him, possibly a 'point to point'. Monthaus has captured the stance of the standing horse as well as the movement of the other horses. He has used white to give light and definition to the costume of the rider and the background. A lovely atmospheric and dynamic watercolour very much of its period and in the spirit of equine portraiture made famous by the likes of Sir Alfred Munnings. Sir Alfred James Munnings, KCVO PRA RI (8 October 1878 – 17 July 1959) was known as one of England's finest painters of horses, and as an outspoken critic of Modernism. Engaged by Lord Beaverbrook's Canadian War...
