About the Item
Entitled "Drawing for Allegheny + Ludlum Helmet & Jacket," this work by Chicago-based artist Patrick Fitzgerald is a companion piece to his sculpture "A+L Helmet & Jacket." Worn by the imagined driver of one of his miniature soap box derby cars, each helmet & jacket is branded with an industrial sponsor, in this case the Allegheny Ludlum Corporation, a steel manufacturer from the early 20th century. Mounted on subtle collage materials and paper fragments, the sketch is drawn to seem improvisational, "as having been removed from a work space and placed immediately into a frame."
"The concept of these drawings," says Fitzgerald, "was to make objects that appear salvaged from a junk shop and rescued from oblivion. The frames are imperfect and show their age, each given one last chance to serve its purpose."
“Drawing for Allegheny + Ludlum Helmet & Jacket” is part of a body of work Fitzgerald calls his “Neighborhood of Infinity,” a borrowed term used literally to refer to the bounty of materials and creative inspiration he found in the industrial landscapes of his childhood in Grand Rapids, MI. Building from found materials collected over the years, he creates works layered with personal memories and keepsakes from the past.
Graphite on paper mounted on collaged board. Framed.

The sculptures and paintings of Chicago-based artist Patrick Fitzgerald are about personal nostalgia, memory, and the beauty he finds in his urban environment. He refers to his body of work as his “Neighborhood of Infinity,” a borrowed term used literally to describe the bounty of materials and creative inspiration he found in the industrial landscapes of his youth. For the last decade, Fitzgerald has been mining his early experiences, re-envisioning the mechanical world of his childhood through the eye of an artist. Born from a fascination with the soap box derby cars of his youth, Fitzgerald constructs miniature soap box cars and the branded attire of their imagined drivers. He builds primarily with found materials - wood, wires, tubing, screen, fabric and collage. The real work involves the finishes: the hand lettering, stages of varying color paint coats, and surface treatments. He always leaves traces of changes or repairs made to a work, adding to the history and evolution of each piece. Futuristic forms imbued with history, each sculpture is an exercise in imagining the future through the lens of the past – or vice versa.

"Faith, " Charcoal on Paper, 2023
By Bruno Surdo
Located in Chicago, IL
Chicago-based fine art painter Bruno A. Surdo is classically trained in drawing and oil painting in the tradition of Renaissance masters. With strong command of the human form, Surdo creates dynamic compositions of people and places that communicate a rich commentary on the world around him. Depicting trees from personal encounters, Surdo’s latest body of work entitled “Tree Spirits” takes us on a foray into the forest, where leaves, branches and burls express something deeply personal. Applying his mastery of figurative realism to the natural world, he experiments with form and texture to uncover the intangible spirits of trees.
Entitled “Faith,” this small-scale charcoal drawing depicts a tree trunk carved with two deep cuts in the shape of a cross. The carving has healed over, assimilated into the bark as just another interesting detail. Up close, the work is loosely drawn with a heavy hand, but from afar, the natural scene still achieves a sense of realism. The tree trunk is conveyed through chaotic scribbling and aggressive strokes of light and dark charcoal, resulting in a pattern that simulates the rough texture of bark. Light falls softly on the tree, illuminating its form against the dark, atmospheric surroundings.
The striking imagery of this work conveys the strong emotional response elicited by Surdo’s personal encounter with this tree. Restricting the composition to only the scarred portion of the tree trunk, Surdo focuses on symbolism of the cross carved into the tree’s side. The carving was inflicted upon the tree by an individual, whether as an act of graffiti or the object of adoration. Despite this wound, the tree persists and grows, adapting and changing until the mark is but another interesting detail. The tree’s spirit endures and speaks to the strength it takes to heal oneself, whether physically or mentally.
