Paul Ackerman
Paul Ackerman (1908-1981) was born in Romania to a well-to-do Jewish family who sought refuge in France four years later. The Ackermans settled in Paris, where young Paul was initially encouraged by his businessman father in his love of art. From a young age he drew and painted and regularly visited the Louvre. However, once he had finished his secondary education, he enrolled in law school to please his father. Nonetheless, he continued his interest in the arts enrolling in courses given by Fernand Leger. Leger was enormously encouraging, and Ackerman, emboldened by the confidence Leger instilled in him, was convinced not to abandon his artistic inclinations. During the Second World War, after Hitler invaded the so-called Free Zone, he and his wife went into hiding in the village of Chindrieux, near Aix-en-Bains where they remained in the house of a friend until France was liberated. Throughout the war, Ackerman made art continuously, painting and drawing on newspaper when he was unable to afford any real artists’ materials. At the time of liberation, Ackerman met the painter Pierre Bonnard, whose evocative work and poetic touch had a lasting impact on his own. Upon his return to Paris in 1944, Ackerman fell profoundly under the sway of Cubism through his friendship with the artist Jacques Villon (1875-1963), which occupied him for a solid decade. In 1947 the first exhibition of the artist was held. In 1970, a retrospective exhibition of Ackermann's works was held at the Paris Galliera Museum. He died in 1981 in Paris (Ref: Prabook.com)

Joyce Wieland "Marie Antoinette"
By Joyce Wieland
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Joyce Wieland (1931-1998) is one of the most accomplished and versatile Canadian artists. She achieved a level of commercial and critical success in her lifetime that was exceptional for a woman during an era in a male-dominated field.
Notably, she was the first female artist to have a solo exhibition at the National Gallery (Ottawa) in 1971 and the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto) in 1987.
Although Wieland was an artist who was always drawing, she launched her career as a painter. Always experimenting, her art practice expanded to incorporate a range of media and materials, from textile works to film. In New York City, she was best known as an experimental filmmaker.
In the mid 1960s Wieland began to embrace more representational and narrative elements in her work. Inspired by comic books, and her background in film as an animator, Wieland embraced figuration albeit clearly influenced by Pop Art.
One of the reoccurring motifs in Wieland's oeuvre is playing with and subverting icons of femininity. In this work Wieland presents icons inspired by the French Queen Marie-Antoinette: a jewelry or hat box, a hairbrush, a medallion. The artist seems to be willing to give a make-over to the Queen. In the "nice medallion painting...

By Jean Calogero
Located in Storrs, CT
Studî della piccola Simonella (Sketches of little Simonella). August 28, 1942. Pencil drawing. 5 1/8 x 7 13/16. Rubbing to the corners, irregular sheet edges, otherwise good condition. Signed, dated and titled in pencil. Housed in an archival French mat and a 14 1/4 x 16 1/4-inch black and gold leaf frame. A charming set of studies of a sleeping child, probably the artist's daughter.
Calogero was born August 20, 1922 in Catania, Sicily. His first exhibitions in 1945 in Sicily and Rome were very successful. He arrived in Paris in 1947 and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. He is best known for his dreamlike Surrealist and genre works.
He exhibited at the Gallery Hervé in 1951 and the following year he went to New York to present his show. In 1953 he was invited to Los Angeles, where he returned two years later, and from where he regularly exhibited his works, and San Francisco.
In 1954, Maximilien Gauthier devoted a book to him published by "The Gemini." The first exhibition in Japan was in 1965. He was awarded the Grand Silver Medal by the City of Paris in 1957. Calogero had numerous exhibitions in Paris, in the fifties, plus the American exhibitions in New York (Associated American Artists, 1952), Los Angeles (James Vigevano Galleries, 1953), and then later in Japan and in major galleries in Italy. He lived and worked for many years in Paris and Italy. He died in 2001.
