Rufino Tamayo
Swinger

$8,475

About

This stunning and refined work was realized by the celebrated Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo, circa 1975. Created in a small edition of 20 using both aquatint and etching printmaking techniques, the work features an abstracted male portrait reduced to its pictographic purity. Employing a formal vocabulary assimilating elements of Pre Columbian, cubist and surrealist art, the aesthetic of the work is unmistakably that of Tamayo. It offers a portrait of a man depicted as simple geometric forms: a rectilinear gridded body; arms as curved, sickle like forms and the head as a bisected orb with two smaller circles representing the eyes. The male figure is presented against a chocolate ground with a vibrant splash of dandelion yellow. Elegant, organic and perfectly sophisticated, this work would be a winning addition to any style of interior from classic Mid Century Modern to contemporary. The work comes presented floating between glass in a custom matte walnut gallery frame. It is hand signed on the front "R. Tamayo" with the edition number "10/20". It also features the artist's last name etched into the composition lower left. "Swinger" inscribed verso in pencil, along with other text (illegible). The work is in excellent condition. Born on August 26, 1899 in Oaxaca, Mexico, Tamayo left the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts after a year and began to teach himself. He moved to New York in the 1930s, eventually returning to Mexico in 1959, he founded the Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City and the Museo Rufino Tamayo in his birthplace of Oaxaca during the early 1980s. The artist continued to create celebrated work until his death on June 24, 1991 in Mexico City, Mexico at the age of 91. His art works are included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among many others. Along with Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, Tamayo is considered one of the great Mexican artists of the 20th century, as well as a highly influential and important of modernist painter, in general. Mexico, circa 1975 Dimensions: 28"W X 38.25"H (Sheet) 32.75"W X 42.75"H X 1"D (Framed)
