Tina Dillman
Desire No. 85 (I want to learn to say no)

2016

About the Item

A contemporary drawing by American artist Tina Dillman from her recent "Our Desires" series. Drawings from this series are being offered for sale to benefit Dillman's residency program "Project Grant". Our Desires, is a collection of thoughts composed of people I hold near and dear. Each desire is handwritten on individual pieces of high quality watercolor paper and presented in the archival frame presentation pictured. Project Grant is a socially engaged artist residency that is operated out of the home of artist, Tina Dillman, in Buffalo, New York. In the Summer 2015, Project Grant, launched it’s social practice residency program and hosted several artists over the course of the summer, June-September. Each artist chosen was provided with an artist stipend, room/board, a studio, wash/dryer and access to a bicycle. Before each project began, I focused on establishing relationships with the local community, to develop a site-specific public project that included workshops, installations/interventions, and performance. In 2015, Project Grant partnered with: Buffalo Arts Studio, CEPA Gallery, Old First Ward Community Center, Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Arts Center, and Western New York Book Arts Center (WNYBAC). Through these partnerships, artists had access to off-site locations for classes and events, equipment, studio visits, and collaborations.

There, he tutored many contemporary greats, including John Galliano, Stella McCartney, Christopher Kane, Wes Gordon, Zac Posen and Hussein Chalayan. Examples of Tangye’s portraits are held in many important collections, both public and private, including the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), Harvard University and London’s National Portrait Gallery. Throughout his teaching career Tangye quietly developed a particularly idiosyncratic art practice. By employing a decisive line with bold applications of richly layered materials, Tangye explores the nuances of the human form in an effort to expose his subjects’ true essence and energy. — Howard Tangye Craig (Richard's Friend - Sitting - Blue Jacket), 2012 Mixed media on grey...
