About the Item

This large scale charcoal on paper is from the artist's series "These fragile truths". This body of work explores the limitations and aesthetics of human memory through portraiture. Like many of our memories, these images have been cherished, processed, and therefore distorted. There’s a yearning for clarity in them coupled with a potent vagueness—an ambivalence attuned to the tensions of recall. The portraits are based on distortions. The use of charcoal provides a material analog for how impermanent, fragile, and malleable memories become over time. Through a process of manipulation, each portrait becomes related though removed from its origin, calling attention to the ways in which remembering transfigures how we recall the past. As a result, meaning is made out of nostalgia, partiality, and longing. These works are shipped unframed rolled in a tube free of charge. Please inquire for a quote to have the worked shipped framed.

  • Pritzlaff - 1903, Male Wielding an Ax, Wearing an Aviator Hat, Charcoal Drawing
    By David Becker
    Located in Chicago, IL
While charcoal is naturally a loose drawing medium, David Becker uses it with precision. With a rich range of value and strong darks, Becker captures the fine details with exacting clarity. In his drawing "Pritzlaff - 1903", the subject, a male with a glazed look, is wielding an ax and pointing a finger at the viewer. This drawing is framed in a simple black frame. The artist has signed with his initials and year on the front and signed his full name on the back of the piece. • Reflection #1, Charcoal Drawing of a Man Gazing Down, Wearing a Bow Tie
    By David Becker
    Located in Chicago, IL
The dramatic, rich markings left by charcoal appear in the earliest primitive cave painting of early humans, which are believed to have been drawn with the charcoal created from burnt sticks. Of the various kinds of charcoal available today, David Becker often chooses vine charcoal which provides a smooth, softer line. Able to produce lines with either a subtle or strong quality, charcoal is wildly versatile, allowing Becker to approach texture, shading and tone with ease. He is able to capture both gestures and emotions with an intuitive mixture of the soft and the dark.
