Frank Francisco Franklin is an American artist whose roots are strongly linked with those of the Mexican people and culture. His powerful style and imagery reflect those ties and influences, and capture the muted beauty and strength of the land and people he came to love as a boy.
Born in Tucson , Arizona in 1947, Franklin moved to Caborca, Sonora, Mexico with his family when he was five. He spent his formative years here among the Mexican people. It is this period that left the greatest impression on his life and his art.
He began painting as a child and is a completely self-taught artist.
His paintings are the heart of a large body of work that includes stone and wood sculptures, drawings, murals and carved wood doors.
Franklin has become one of the leading naive artist of the Southwest. His work is in collections across the United States and on permanent display at the Museum of Folk Art in Berlin, Germany.
"I owe much of my happiness to the Mexican people. When I was a kid I tried to be one of them. I did not completely succeed. With paint I tell the story of how they have always been for me. Therefore, my paintings are like having a broken love affair that never ends."
