Artist Siyuan Ma exhibits the Shanhua Temple, located inside the ancient city of Datong in Shanxi Province–a key cultural relic under state-level protection. "Shanhua Temple is a relatively complete group of buildings from the Liao and Jin dynasties," says Siyuan. He aptly captures the grand and rugged style of the cultural landmark. A beautiful garden extends in the foreground, offering a unique perspective of the imperial temple.
About the Artist
Artist Siyuan Ma creates tranquil impressionist watercolors of cultural architecture and landscapes. His integration of stains and marks left by flowing water-based pigments recall the gentle and light feeling of Chinese freehand ink painting. “Beautiful scenery is not necessarily far away. It is often around you, waiting to be discovered,†says Siyuan. Bright hues freely dance with gentle nuances, expressing a sense of stillness and peace. He carefully explores light and color and applies various contemporary painting techniques as he continuously expands the edge of painting media—turning a plain surface into a poetic space full of emotion. He creates art that is not only limited to visual aspects but also deeply meaningful. Born in Tianjin, China, Siyuan finished a bachelor’s degree from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2011. Now living in Los Angeles, Siyuan converted his living room into his home studio, which he keeps clean and tidy. His creative process is deeply rooted in where he lives and draws inspiration from my surroundings. As he continues to pursue his creative passion, Siyuan takes on part-time jobs, which allows him to earn a living while still pursuing his artistic dreams.

Artist Maurice Dionne illustrates a glimpse of O'Connor Street in Ottawa. He draws inspiration from the quality of light and the steeple, evident in the background. The light, the cars, and all the reflections create dynamic movement in the scene. "In sketching, I left a lot of impressionistic areas to catch your imagination," says Maurice.
About the Artist
Artist Maurice Dionne paints watercolor scenes of Ottawa, from quiet city walks to charming Victorian homes. "The transparency of the medium is truly remarkable; it allows so much light to shine through," says Maurice. He devotedly captures the mood and vibrancy most often inspired by the people around him. He finished a degree in science but ultimately decided to embrace his true freedom of expression. Now a full-time artist, he commits to a home studio as his haven of creativity, where he has access to artist-grade material that ensures that his pieces will be archival and endure the test of time. Maurice's work received merits from The Marketer Art Competition in 2020 and 2021 and was featured in the Electric Street Gallery, Ottawa Art Gallery, and Art Gallery of Ontario. He relishes cycling, hiking, kayaking, reading, and visiting specialty coffee shops with his spouse in his spare time.

"This painting is a closer-up version of an earlier work called French Laundry," shares artist Catherine McCargar. She uses the same technique of priming the watercolor paper with a layer of gesso as the first painting. The process gives more fluidity to the paint, enabling her to execute wet-on-wet and to move it around as she sees fit. Catherine achieves a truly impressionistic painting with contrasting soft and hard edges that keep the viewer engaged.
