About

sumi ink and oil stick on Korean paper 72 x 61.5 x 1.5 inches framed Jun Kaneko’s interest in art making began during his adolesence in Japan, where he studied painting with Satoshi Ogaway. In 1963 he came to the United States to continue his studies at Chouinard Institute of Art, a branch of CalArts. When he first arrived in Los Angeles he stayed at the home of legendary collectors, Fred and Mary Marer, and was exposed to a comprehensive collection of revolution work by ceramic artists John Mason, Peter Voulkos, Jerry Rothman, and Ken Price, among others. Kaneko’s encounter with this work was a formative experience. “Once I saw all of this,” Kaneko said, “it was impossible not to be interested in ceramics.” Soon after, he began studying with Peter Voulkos, Paul Soldner, and Jerry Rothman in California during what came to be known as the The Contemporary Ceramics Movement. Jun Kaneko is a pioneer in the field of monumental ceramic sculpture, building massive works that defy the traditional bounds of clay. For five decade he has strived to take clay sculpture out of the decorative arts and position it in the mainstream of contemporary art. Renowned artist Peter Voulkos said of Kaneko, “His accomplishments are unrivaled in the field of ceramic art. His technical achievements alone have redefined the possibilities the medium has to offer.” His work is included in more than 70 museum collections, has realized over 30 public art commissions and installations in the US and Japan, orchestrated multi-year collaborations with industrial ceramic manufacturers, designed three operas, and been the recipient of national and organizational fellowships.
