Attrib. Frederick Barry
Attrib. Frederick Barry - Late 19th Century Watercolour, A View of Gloucester

Unknown

About the Item

A very fine and delightfully detailed late 19th century watercolour, attributed to the artist Frederick Barry. This well-composed landscape view characterises the romanticisation of the pastoral genre that developed in popularity in the latter half of the 19th Century. Two figures are pictured from the back, walking away from the viewer into the landscape beyond, drawing the eye within the composition. A lady carries a large sheaf of wheat on her head, while wearing a long dress, untypical for an agricultural worker. The central tower of Gloucester cathedral dominates an otherwise flat and distant landscape, with fine line and form. Well-presented in a gilt lined mount, and gilt wooden frame, as shown. Inscribed with the title to the reverse. Inscribed on the reverse. On wove.
