The piece captures the dramatic and awe-inspiring beauty of the Arizona desert, showcasing a lone tree, native flora, darkening storm clouds, and distant rock formations. Burr's masterful use of color and texture brings the natural elements to life, conveying the power, stillness, and raw beauty of the American Southwest during the spring/summer season. The drawing is presented in a custom frame with archival matting and UV-protectant glass to ensure its long-term preservation. The framed dimensions measure 17 x 20 ¼ x 1 inches, with the image size measuring 10 x 13 ¼ inches, making it an exquisite addition to any fine art collection. Provenance Private Collection, Denver, Colorado. About the Artist: George Elbert Burr (1859–1939) George Elbert Burr was born in Monroe Falls, Ohio, in 1859, and developed a deep passion for art from an early age. His first etchings were created with zinc scraps from his father’s hardware store, and despite limited formal education at the Art Institute of Chicago, Burr’s natural talent and dedication to self-study propelled him to success. Throughout his career, Burr worked as an illustrator for major publications such as Scribner’s, Harper’s, and The Observer. He also created over 1,000 etchings of Heber R. Bishop’s jade collection for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Burr’s travels across Europe from 1896 to 1901 significantly influenced his art, which later included a notable series of desert-themed etchings. In 1906, Burr moved to Colorado for health reasons, and his winters were spent exploring the deserts of Southern California, Arizona, and New Mexico. This exploration led to his famous Desert Set, a series of 35 etchings that remain some of his most celebrated works. Burr relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1924, where he became an influential figure in the city's art scene, serving as president of the Phoenix Fine Arts Association and contributing to the city's first major art exhibition. He continued to live and work in Phoenix until his death in 1939. Burr’s legacy as an etcher and painter is preserved in numerous prestigious collections. His works, especially those depicting the Southwestern desert landscape, are highly regarded for their evocative portrayal of the American West. This stunning 1924 colored pencil drawing exemplifies Burr’s mastery of landscape art and his deep connection to the Southwestern desert, making it an exceptional representation of American regionalism and a valuable addition to any fine art collection.
