An elegant, modernist coastal scene showing a substantial stone-built breakwater at low tide juxtaposing beached boats in rust and jade drawn up on the sandy shore.
A student at the Art Academy Berlin-Charlottenburg in Brandenburg and the Städelschule in Frankfurt from 1931-1937, Schulz-Ihlefeldt was a lecturer in anatomy and painting at the Städelschule with his own master studio until his military service began in 1940. A prisoner of war in Russia, Schulz-Ihlefedt recorded his experience through his drawings and watercolors. After the end of military service in 1949 and, returning to a destroyed studio, Schulz-Ihlefeldt worked and lived in Hofeim, where a collection of his work is in the permanent collection of the Hofheim Museum. He turned to abstract painting under the influence of Nachkriegsmoderne in the West and became a representative of the German Informel. Throughout the 1950's, many of Schulz-Ihlefeldt's works were on paper. In the 1960's, Schulz-Ihlefeldt returned to teaching, and was appointed assistant professor at the University of Giessen.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Herbert Taylor Lewis was known as a painter of abstracts, still lives and figure studies painted with a vivid palette in a bold Modernist style. Lewis first studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, and, subsequently, in Europe including at the Académie Julian in Paris during the birth of Modernism and Cubism in the early part of the 20th century. Upon his return to the United State, he kept a studio in New York City for several years but, by 1920, was living and painting in Arizona.
