About the Item
Mid 19th century pastel drawing view of the Chapel Saint Pierre at Villefranche, with the harbour beyond, by British artist Hercules Brabazon Brabazon. The chapel was later made famous by the artist Jean Cocteau who decorated the interior in the 1950's.
Brabazon would have visited Villefranche and captured this view on one of his many European tours in the 1860's. The drawing comes from his sketch book or 'carnet de voyage'.
Acquired directly from the artist's estate sale in 1926 and in the same family collection ever since. This pastel is on its original Brabazon card mount, with annotations.
