About the Item
Scottish Highland mountains, river rapids and heather on the hill with cows, this 19th century impressionist watercolor is bright and fresh. Signed by the artist, John Barrett (1822-1898), on the lower left side. This painting is aptly titled 'Highland Cattle Beside a Stream'. A note on the back indicates the painting may have been done late in Barrett's career, in 1895. The note also indicates a small town, Mary Tavy, Dartmoor in southwest England as a likely residence of the artist. John Barrett is a British artist, known for watercolor and oil paintings.
The impressionist style is enhanced with a range of fresh pastel color; early autumn pale yellow leaves, soft blue mountain, pinks and lavendars, with a clear white light cast over the work, especially around the stream.
The watercolour is in excellent condition in a newer frame presented with matting under glass, measuring about 22" in height and 31" in width. Ready to hang on your wall!

Kirkton Bridge, Balquhidder
By JD Henderson
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Impressionist/Post impressionist style painting 'Kirkton Bridge, Balquhidder' by Scottish contemporary artist JD Henderson, is a Monet-like image of a Scottish bridge in Balquhidder, the Clan homeland of McLaren in central Scotland. Dated 1995 (verso) and signed by the artist in the lower right corner, the painting is on canvas with oil paint in a new gold frame. JD Henderson is described as a 20th century Scottish Colourist and a landscape artist, using impressionism and post impressionism styles. 'Kirkton Bridge' demonstrates the Colourist trend, but also broader brushstrokes and thick applications of paint from post impressionism that gives the subject matter priority over fleeting naturalistic color and light. The actual bridge and water...

Wendy Reeves garnered acclaim for her Scottish Highland and Lakeland paintings. Born in 1944 in Ewell, Surrey, she took to her father Gordon’s craft, deciding early on that she would be a painter. Prior to her famous paintings of the British Isles, artist Wendy Reeves painted scenes from a trip she made to Spain when she was 21. It was during this time that her dream of following in her father’s footsteps became a reality, and when she returned to England she cemented her name as an artist.
Wendy Reeves' paintings showcase her talent with natural landscapes and the wildlife that inhabits them. Her work often features ochre and pink lights...
