About the Item

Ed Baynard (American, 1940- 2016) Untitled Monotype with handcoloring on paper! 1981 28-1/2 x 36-3/4 inches (72.4 x 93.3 cm) (paper size) Frame is included. Approx - 34.5 x 40.75" Signed and dated in pencil lower right Published by Tyler Graphics, New York. Tyler Graphics is one the the best printing shops in the county. BIO- Ed Baynard (1940-2016) was a graphic designer for The Beatles, a clothing designer for Jimi Hendrix and he featured in Jack Smith's incendiary film ‘Flaming Creatures’ (1963). Raised in Washington DC, Baynard lived in Paris and London during the 1960s. After moving back to the US, the artist rose to prominence during the 1970s and his first solo exhibition took place at New York's Willard Gallery in 1971 on the recommendation of Agnes Martin. Baynard went on to have exhibitions at galleries including Betty Parsons Gallery, New York (1973); Marian Goodman Gallery, New York (1977); John Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco (1980); and Barbara Gladstone Gallery, New York (1980/81). Seemingly in contrast to his flamboyant life, Baynard's practice shows aesthetic restraint. Rendered in a flat, graphic style that recalls Japanese Ukiyo-e prints, his paintings are both meditative and lyrical in their exploration of the still-life. Steeped in tradition yet wholeheartedly contemporary, Baynard's compositions comprise slender-necked flowers and miscellaneous ephemera set against pale, monochrome backgrounds. In 2020, Baynard had a major exhibition in London at Stephen Friedman Gallery. This exhibition followed a highly acclaimed solo exhibition at White Columns in New York (2019) co-curated by Matthew Higgs and Vince Aletti. The artist’s works can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Tate, London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, among many others.

Monotype
By Marvin Lipofsky
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Monotype" 1991 is an original monotype by renown American glass sculptor Marvin Lipofsky. It is signed, titled and dated in pencil by the artist. The artwork size is 30 x 22.5 inches, framed is 33.75 x 26.25 inches. It is custom framed in the original wooden off white frame. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: Glassmaker, sculptor and graphic artist, Marvin Lipofsky, born in 1938, received his B.F.A. degree in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois. He earned his M.S. degree, 1963, and M.F.A., 1964, in sculpture from the University of Madison, Wisconsin. There, he was one of Harvey Littleton's first graduate students working in glass. Littleton had been the first American artist, in the 1960s, to visit Czechoslovakia, famous for its work in glass, where glass sculpture had been made since the 1950s. Marvin Lipofsky would also be an early visitor, observing there. Since that time, the artist has traveled extensively, collaborating with the world's best glass artists. After graduation from Wisconsin, Lipofsky was hired by the University of California, Berkeley, where he introduced the second university glass program in America (Littleton was the first). Lipofsky also established the glass program at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in 1967, the San Francisco area becoming a center for glass in the 60s and 70s because of his own work and the students produced by his teaching. While Lipofsky may be best known for three-dimensional globe forms, he has indulged himself in the making of glass Pop Art pickles and hamburgers. He has also created multi-colored, irregular flower...
