Part of my Stroud Valleys series, this work was painted in the summer of 2020. These fields leading down to Stroud town centre from Whiteshill and Ruscombe are just so peaceful and full of colour during the summer months. The grass turns gold and amazes all who step foot onto it, feeling the crunch of dry pasture beneath.
Max Panks is an actor who started his career as a watercolour landscape artist in January 2017. He had always nurtured a passion for drawing and portraiture from an early age but stepped away from his love of visual art to train as an actor in 2010. Now, Max creates beautiful watercolour landscape art as a compliment to the destinations that life takes him. Having worked as a performer on tours, cruise ships, London theatre and more, he is able to keep adding to his diary of expressive landscapes with each new adventure.

It was a wonderful day meandering down stream near Symonds Yat. We turned the bend to see other boats congregated on the pebbles for a Sunday picnic. We beached our boat to take in the surroundings. The day was a great experience with sparkling light on the water and the sounds of the water over rocks. A few quick sketches and many photographs allowed me to then work at a large scale in the studio. It was painted with large brushes with watercolour. The chosen colours are blue and green. Presented in its original gilt wood frame under glass with trade label to the backboard from Deighton’s Strand Gallery. This gallery was well-known during the 1930s as fine art dealers and frame makers – it was located off Trafalgar square. Though he often signed with his full name Ruskin Spear's work on paper 'Hammersmith Grove' is signed in the same initials as our work and hence the attribution. This work is also stylistically similar to his other drawings of seascapes and coastal landscapes. This is a charming and fresh view of a coastal landscape probably the Jurassic coast of Dorset or his beloved Cornwall. The vertiginous composition gives it an angular almost abstract form highlighted by the contrast between the colour of the rockface, the vegetation and the blue sea.
