About the Item

Early modern original watercolor and gouache ad layout for Foley's by Houston portraitist Robert C. Joy. The work features a German military aircraft flying over a pile of tin cans that are turning into bullets. There are lines left to the right where ad text could be added. Currently hung in a black frame with a cream matting. Artist Biography: Robert C. Joy (1910-1993) Houston portraitist, painted more than 350 portraits over his 40-year career. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1927-28. His subjects included Texas political, business, and social leaders. Among his subjects were former President Lyndon Baines Johnson; Houston philanthropist Ima Hogg; cattleman and banker Gus S. Wortham; Lillie Abercrombie, whose husband was founder of Cameron Iron Works and also helped charter Texas Children's Hospital; and Will Clayton who served as assistant and later undersecretary of state under Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman and was a primary designer of the Marshall Plan.
