About the Item

Signed lower left, 'R.R. Dvorak' for Robert Regis Dvorak (American, 20th century) and painted circa 1995. A panoramic coastal landscape showing a serene expanse of Rosarito beach in Mexico's Baja California by this much-exhibited and well-listed California artist whose work is held in the permanent collections of national institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and New York's Museum of Modern Art. Robert Dvorak received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Illinois, his Master of Architecture degree from the University of California, Berkeley and was then awarded a two year Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. He served as professor of architecture for seven years at the University of Oregon and for a further two years at the University of California, Berkeley. At UCB, he taught design and communication skills including drawing, film-making, watercolor painting and other graphic media. Dvorak was subsequently awarded a grant from the California Arts Council to promote art and creativity for elementary school teachers and children. Dvorak draws on a rich background of unusual experience having been a member of the moon shot design team for the vehicle assembly building at Cape Canaveral, a crew-member on large sailing yachts in the Greek islands, designing maternity centers in Trinidad and making experimental films. His animated films have been featured in festivals in the USA, Europe, and Australia. As an author, Robert Dvorak has both written and illustrated numerous books on drawing and painting including 'Travel Drawing and Painting', 'The Practice of Drawing as Meditation', 'Drawing Without Fear', The Pocket Drawing Book', 'The Magic of Drawing', and 'Experiential Drawing'. He also wrote and illustrated 'Selling Art 101'. Two of his articles have been published by American Artist Magazine, 'Sketching while Traveling in Greece' and 'Twenty Minutes to a Beautiful Figure'. He has produced 23 posters of his drawings, paintings, and woodcuts; and made 22 short 16mm films. Many of Dvorak's paintings and films are in corporate and private collections. His films are in the collections of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institute, the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Walker Art Institute, his paintings in collections including the Bank of America, the Del Monte Corporation and ICON of California as well as many private collections including those of the Vanderbilts, the Boyds, the Kwei collection among others.
