About the Item
A fine late 19th century watercolour from Walter G. Reynolds (1832-1896), although he is also recorded as Warwick G Reynolds, which was his given name at birth. The artist depicts a rural scene with quaint Kent cottages and figures going about their daily business. A small child feeds her chickens, while a gentleman on horseback can be seen chatting to two young ladies. This typical scene for Reynolds is beautifully detailed and composed, setting up an idyllic, somewhat stylized, depiction of rural life in Victorian England.
Reynold's artistic career was varied, he contributed comic heads to Judy in 1871-79, and his work also appeared in Funny Folks (1878) and C. H. Ross's Variety Paper (1877-78). He was a member of the National Watercolour Society from 1864 to 1865, and wrote a novel and several short stories. Reynolds exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1879-1884. Wonderfully presented in a carved wooden frame and cream card mount.
