About the Item
A mid 20th century modern work on paper of a female nude by Andre Petroff. Signed with monogram bottom right, presented under glass in plain red painted wood frame. The work was acquired directly from the estate of his daughter.
PETROV ANDREY VLADIMIROVICH (1894-1975) was born in Saint Petersbourg, Russia. In 1909-1914 he studied at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, under the direction of Bilibine and Roerich. He fled Russia at the time of the revolution and like so many of his contemporaries settled in Paris, France. In 1920 he continued his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Later he moved and settled in the South of France in Cagnes Sur Mer where he continued to paint, exhibit and meet all the artists then resident in this part of the world including Matisse and Picasso.
Henri Matisse's principal subject during the years 1917 to 1930, known as his early Nice period, was the female figure. Favourite among these was the odalisque. The odalisque was frequently posed among decorative textiles and carpets, cushions and draped fabrics. She was (half) dressed in typical North African costume and depicted standing, seated or reclining. Matisse first came to the theme of the odalisque in Morocco which he visited in 1912 and again in 1913. Morocco provided him with his greatest inspiration outside of France. In this painting, the lines defining the figure merge with the ornamental material of a couch. The importance of this work concerns decorative patterning. Moreover, Paul Cézanne's influence can be seen here in the flattening of space and the interpenetration of foreground and background. The use of exotic clothes and the stress on line and colour distances Matisse aesthetically from the erotic content of the picture.
