Biedermeier Period Academic Life Study Male Nude Carrying a Staff circa 1826.
Located in Sutton Poyntz, Dorset
Eduard Braun. German ( b.1798 - d.1876 ). Academic Life Study of a Male Nude Carrying a Staff Pencil and Charcoal on Paper with Heightening on paper. Annotation (presumably a dedication) lower left. Paper size 24 inches x 16.5 inches ( 61cm x 42cm ). Frame size 30.1 inches x 22.2 inches ( 76.5cm x 56.5cm ). Available for sale; this academic life drawing of a male nude is by the German artist Eduard Braun and dates from around 1826. The drawing is presented and supplied in an interesting configuration with a modern twist (which is shown in these photographs). The drawing has been mounted between two sheets of Tru Vue Museum Glass® UV99 so that the wall or setting behind the hanging is visible and therefore provides the surround for the artwork. This antique drawing is in very good condition, commensurate with its age. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The drawing is not signed but came from a portfolio of drawings by Eduard Braun. This drawing has a later annotation and presumably a dedication in red ink in the bottom left hand corner. The annotation is the monogram HL within a heart. The configuration of the HL resembles the format used by the French artist Henri Laurens 1885 – 1954 where the downstroke of the L is merged with the second downstroke of the H. This stunning original pencil and charcoal drawing on paper is by a German artist called Eduard Braun. He was born in 1798 and died in 1876, but little else is known about him apart from the fact that he was active in the Paris art salons and rooms. This drawing is from a portfolio by this artist on a similar theme and is typical of the type of academic study undertaken by serious art students throughout the nineteenth century. One of the other drawings in this portfolio is annotated as being created in 1826 and there is every reason to think that this drawing is contemporaneous with that. The drawing is of a very high standard, capturing both strength and sensitivity, showcasing the artist’s ability to reproduce a lifelike image of a nude model. The subject of this drawing is a young man, possibly in his mid-twenties, with a toned and muscular body. He is standing with his weight on his right leg, which is slightly bent, and holding a wooden staff in his right hand. His left foot is raised slightly with the toes pointed, and his left hand is placed behind his back. Although he is facing fully towards the viewer, his gaze is to his left. He has pleasant, serene expression on his face. The background is bare, save for the shadow cast by the model. This original antique drawing...

Woman at Rest, Nude Female, Pastel and Charcoal Drawing on Green Paper
Located in Chicago, IL
The loose style of this drawing comes together quickly to convey the relaxed state of this nude female. The pastel accents bring a beautiful warmth to this drawing. Christopher Ganz Woman at Rest, 2013 pastel and charcoal on green paper 23h x 18w in 58.42h x 45.72w cm CG0062 -ARTIST STATEMENT- I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an Everyman who is at odds with society and his self. Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid. This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light. -BIO- Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. Christopher's artistic influences are many; from a seminal exposure to Dore's engravings of the Divine Comedy, to Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya, and up to Lucian Freud, Mark Tansey...

Untitled - After Cadmus - Nude Males Embracing, Original Graphite Drawing
Located in Chicago, IL
This untitled work by Rick Sindt was inspired by the works of Paul Cadmus. It is a small graphite drawing of two male nude figures with both of their faces somewhat obscured during an intimate moment. The graph lines often used by artist are still visible to distinguish between the photographic elements of a Polaroid photo and this actual drawing. The piece is framed in a white float frame measuring 12.5h x 10.5w inches. Rick Sindt Untitled - After Cadmus graphite on panel 10h x 8w in 25.40h x 20.32w cm Shifting the historic male gaze into a male-on-male gaze, this body of work anchors its exploration of queer culture in relationships and introspection. Beginning with a survey of several photo archives, I overwhelmingly encountered pictures that fit into two distinct categories: spectacular demonstrations or public displays of sexuality. All of these images were overtly political. Then, I began to find a subset of more intimate images. Typically, these were images submitted by loved ones or donated to foundations after someone’s death. These images depicted common, tender scenes. Working my way through these images, I reflected on D. A. Miller’s assertion that gay identity, to which we have entrusted our politics and ethics, stands in an essentially reductive relation to the queer desires on which it is based. And David Halperin’s argument that, “identity has become the preferred category for thinking about homosexuality. Moreover, it has been promoted at the direct expense of pleasure or feelings or subjectivity.” This left me asking the questions: how is queer culture transmitted if not genealogically? Is there a universal queer experience? What is queer sensibility and subjectivity and can it be visually represented? In the body of work submitted here, black and white graphite drawings maintain a Polaroid scale referencing the found historical photographs on which they are based, oil paintings provide isolated moments of feeling as they investigate questions about queer dispositions in a contemporary setting, and a few key sketches provide insight into how a few individual inquiries began. Berthomme Saint-André, The Nap, Watercolor, 1925
Located in Saint Amans des cots, FR
Watercolor by Louis BERTHOMME SAINT-ANDRE, France, ca.1925. The nap. With frame: 75x60.5 cm - 29.5x23.8 inches, without frame, just the watercolor: 53x39 cm - 20.9x15.35 inches. Signed lower left "Berthomme St André" (see photo). Louis Berthommé Saint-André is a figurative painter, fresco painter, decorator, illustrator, engraver, ceramist and French lithographer born in 1905. He comes from rural and commercial France: his father ran a wine and grocery business. In his youth, Louis Berthommé Saint-André was injured by a kick, which left him with a stiff leg, preventing him from driving, among other things. The family left Oise to settle in Saintes, where the artist studied at La Recouvrance. He entered as a student architect with Georges Naud, responsible for the historical monuments of Charente then, in 1921, he entered the School of Fine Arts in Paris. Louis Berthommé Saint-André is one of the great representatives of French figurative painting in the 20th century. He was trained at the School of Fine Arts by two very old masters who died during his training: Fernand Cormon (1845-1924) and Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921). He retains from their training the taste for well-learnt techniques, but from his first works, he is part of modernity. His constructions show decomposed forms inspired by Cézanne, while maintaining a keen sense of rigour. He never strayed from realism, but his very colourful, sometimes incisive palette and his freedom in representation gave his painting a bite and an acidity that placed Louis Berthommé Saint-André among the great talents of his time. Silver medal at the Salon of French Artists where he exhibited from 1924 to 1929, he won the Abd-el-Tif Prise in 1925 and was then the youngest resident of the villa in Algiers. Friend of Jean Launois, in addition to his recognised portraits, he painted Algiers and the Kasbah. His studies of women recall those of Eugène Delacroix, but if his luminous inspiration is due to the Algerian sun, his touch is more Cézanne than purely orientalist. He left Algeria in 1928, to return there in 1931. Before the war, Berthommé Saint-André exhibited regularly in all the major Salons: from 1928 at the Salon d'Automne, at the Salon des Beaux-Arts (1934 to 1936) at the Salon des Tuileries since 1935. His inspiration is close to surrealism . During the Occupation, he became very "fauve", in reaction to the darkness of the war. He joined the Resistance, and collaborated with Vaincre (Resistance newspaper). After the war, he developed a style close to poetic reality (Brianchon, Legueult, Oudot, Terechkovitch, Cavaillès. Caillard, Limouse, and Planson), without however ever being part of the group so called. He is present at the Salon Comparaison, at the Salon of painters Witnesses of our time, is president of the Salon of drawing and water-based painting. He has exhibited solo internationally, in Europe, the USA and Japan in particular. In 1977, he received just before his death, the grand prise of Painters Witnesses of their Time. He died on October 1, 1977 in Paris. Bibliography - Michel Droit. Berthommé Saint-André.
