About the Item

This watercolor painting with ink accents depicting a young fashionable woman with a confident direct glance is in excellent condition -- no stains, tears, etc to the painting; antique wood frame with "antiqued" gilded filet also in excellent condition, created in the frame fashion of the time. Born in Fredonia, Pennsylvania in 1859, Simmons studied art at the Academie Julian in Paris from 1886 until 1892, with noted American painter William Merritt Chase. While in France, Simmons exhibited his works at the celebrated Paris Salon, and upon his return to the United States, at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Simmons eventually moved to Ohio, becoming known for his figure, landscape, genre and portrait painting. His works can be found in the collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Supreme Court of Ohio, and many others. He died in 1926. Simmons's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from 1,007 USD to 3,600 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. Portrait Of A Young Girl In A Lilac Dress With A Black Bow. Circa 1860. SIgned.
Located in Firenze, IT
Portrait of a young girl in a lilac dress with a black bow. Circa 1860. Signature below right, partially visible. Size with frame 59cm x 49cm Size without frame 33cm x 24cm The portrait depicts a young girl with an elegant hairstyle, her hair carefully tied back. Dressed in the fashion of the 1860s, her light lilac dress reflects the synthetic aniline colors, a novelty in fashion at the time. A black bow at the neck and slightly black straps accentuate her attire. Represented at mid-length, with a mysterious and melancholic gaze, suggesting a mourning endured over a year ago. The portrait, executed in pastels, chalks, and charcoals on paper, highlights the mastery and speed of the artist's execution. Framed in a vintage oval frame...
